I had a mishap and broke the skeg on our boat last week. So I am looking for recommendations of someone to repair it - weld on a replacement Skeg. Let me know who you recommend. Thanks JS

There was a product called "Skeg Guard" which was a prosthetic for people in your predicament. If you search for it you may find several sources in case you can't get a rebuild.
Good luck! |

Try east coast welding in gilford. They do a lot of them. It is a quick cheap job. Certainly not a big deal.

John Spooner over at Diamond Shine in Gilford.... He does all sorts of welding and has the right equipment to weld aluminum.

Shep Browns has a man (Butch Galivan) who has been doing just that for years. Butch lives on Meredith Neck Rd. Give him a call or just take the boat over to Sheps

dare I ask .... "where you left your skeg?"
I know it wasn't you because it was an inboard but .....I witnessed a fairly large 32'+ (older style) inboard hit the rocks off Eagle this past weekend. I sit in amazement of how many boats and how many time people cut the wrong side of the markers in that area (FL#44) and make it through with God's help. Last Saturday this big old beast went running through at about 25-30mph and wasn't so lucky. all aboard were fine & they got the "Ride of Shame" (Tow) home. .

I'd be concerned about other damage that might have happened. Wouldn't a jolt strong enough to break the sked also damage the lower unit? I had my lower unit repaired years ago and it was not cheap. I would consider an insurance claim and get everything checked out and repaired. I use Shep Browns and they always do good work.

East Coast is a few hundred dollars at most I believe. They may be able to do it on the boat, if not take it to Matt at Supreme Marine. He can remove the drive, drop it off and probably have you back together in a few days.

The best part of Butch Galivans service is the fact that having been the master marine mechanic for Sheps for 30 yrs, he will do a complete evaluation of damage it only takes 2 minutes to check out. The work can be done with lower unit on boat or he may elect to drop the lower section for repair.
Cost? $75 for welding or that is what it use to be several years ago.!! Good luck |

sorry to hear --- but it coulda been worse !
I squared off the bottom of one of my older boats in Meredith Bay a few years back ..... and I mean SQUARED off ! With good damage to the inner prop (Bravo 3) ... to this day I still do not understand how or why the second prop was never even dinged. .

One thing to keep in mind when having a skeg repair made is that modern outdrives have pretty sophisticated coatings, and not just a layer of paint. For my volvo, I know they recommend a specific aluminum treatment, primer, color paint, and clear coat, for a four-step process that best matches the original level of protection.
