Rt 28, Alton road work
Can anyone tell me what they are doing on Rt 28 just south of the Alton circle near Stockbridge Corner. Looks like combination drainage project and widening of the road.

More information than you probably ever wanted to know about this may be found here
http://www.lakesrpc.org/rt28audit-f/...tockbridge.pdf There's been a whole Rt. 28 Corridor study with plans to upgrade the 2 lane section through Barnstead and up to the Alton Traffic Circle for many years now. As always, the problem is funding.....

Long and short of it.
They are improving the drainage in the section of road from just south of Hammwoods rd to just north of Stockbridge Corner Rd.
Additionally, they are going to rework the intersection at Stockbridge Corner Rd, eliminating the little cut off that formed the third leg of a triangle. Also going to improve the Hammwoods intersection. Also moved some utility poles and lines.

corner
I assume Stockbridge Road goes straight where 28 bends left. I always worry that I might be one drowsy drive away from seeing Stockbridge Rd unintentionally...

Heading north correct.
And the construction will do away with that possibility. Too bad there is not the money to widen the section from Barnstead just north of JJ Goodwins to the Alton Circle.

Growing up in Barnstead, it was the talk of the town in the early 80's when the state did a study and mapped out a route for straightening out Rt. 28. Too bad it didn't happen, that is one horrible stretch of road in bad weather.

And the project has been in the DOT "10 year plan" since then. The problem is that each year it gets pushed back down the list while other state projects get funded. Maybe 10 years ago 3 high priority segments were identified between the Alton Circle and Barnstead: the Stockbridge corner intersection, the North Road intersection and the now completed new bridge in Alton. Maybe North Road will be next, dangerous vertical curve limits sight distance.
