HD Webcams

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone knows what type of camera is installed at the Weirs. Looks like it has been upgraded to be able to provide high resolution photos - and it looks great. I would like to upgrade my own webcam to be able to take photos at a higher resolution than 640 x 480, but I'm having trouble finding outdoor wireless webcams that have that ability (and don't cost thousands of dollars). Does anyone know?

You might look at www.portsmouthwebcam.com and find out who they use...very clear web cam and even clearer pictures....been watching the demolition of the Old Memorial bridge there for a couple of months...

If you find an outdoor friendly HD webcam you like, but it is wired only, you can make it wireless with a "wireless to Ethernet bridge", such as the Buffalo Technology AirStation N300. I've done with with several Stardot Webcams and it works great (down to about 0 degrees). I purchased a project box from Radio-Shack to protect the bridge from the elements, then mounted everything on a 2x6 board.

They are using a real SLR for those images and it shows. If you can setup a real SLR or video camera inside looking out a window and connect it to a computer for the uploads you'll get excellent quality like they do.

Cameras designed as self-contained webcams can't quite equal that quality. The Axis P1346-E used for the WeirsCAM has lots of great at features but certainly isn't as sharp as the Portsmouth SLR cameras. I think the Star-Dot cameras widely used around the lake (old WeirsCAM, Minge Cove, Snake Eyes, Anchor Marine CAM and others) actually produce a sharper image than my Axis camera and I will probably use them again in the future.

Use any decent IP cam and a Ubiquiti Nanostation M2 to make it wireless for about $70.
