Does anyone know the name of the restaurant that was located where Canoe now is? It was previously Chequers (sp?), but what was the name of the restaurant prior to that?

Chequers Harbor is correct, before that, if memory serves me right, it was:

Longwood Farms

Do you remember it,Hazelnut.?...I owned it in the 70's....bought it from Dick Tower and sold to Dick Flynn.Lots of fun there....most of my cooks were all older local gals and they were a HOOT....as well as being dam good cooks.Everything made from scratch...even the french fries.

I DO!!!! I loved it. It was a real local "diner like" experience.

I also enjoyed it after the renovations when it became a bit more polished as a casual restaurant. I thought the food was good.

Chequers.... I never enjoyed it.

I always missed Longwood Farms after it closed. You should start up another place. Unless you already have one?

I stop there to eat in 1973 when i interviewed to teach at Belknap College lucky i didn't take the job as i wouldn't have gotten one paycheck as it went out of business in September

Ok, here's another trivia question for you older folks..... 50+

Back in the late 60's, there was a restaurant, located where the present
Lyon's Den is located in Gilford/Glendale.

A place I have fond memories as a teenager. We went there every Friday night, after driving up from Massachusetts for the w/e stay on Varney Point.

This will be easy for some of you !

True,Hazelnut...it was so much fun.It was the gathering place for all of the local contractors,builders,realtors and locals. .wish I had a dollar for every deal that was made there.Peter Krane(Kranewood Shores) would pull in each morning around 7am in his new (1973) Cadillac convertable...he was dressed impeccably and held court over breakfast with all of his fellow builders and realtors.Mel Borrin weas just starting out then as well as many of the builders who are now well known in the area. It was a wonderful time back then with lots of colorful local customers.

Ahh the Moles Hole, had pizza there on my Honeymoon. That endeavor did not last as long as the restaurant.

Didn't think anyone on this forum is older than me! Another trivia. Between the Glendale docks and the Glendale store there was a small restuarant with a singing waitress/cook. This was in the sixties. Can anyone remember the name of the restuarant?

I can remember frequenting Long Wood Farms, with Dick Tower.

In Gendale, Gretchen was not there in the 60's, more like mid 80's.

Was there a diner called Grekhens?

i worked there washing dishes and doing prep work the summer of '72, rick tower was managing it and had beautiful corvette that was the envy of all of us! everything was made from scratch and i must have cut a ton of fries that summer...

that's right, and when the two regular dishwashers at the Woodshed quit suddenly they brought me over to cover for a couple of nights... they were running full throttle and i was never busier... it was great to get back to longwood!!

Froggy,you probably still have nightmares about peeling and cutting french fries.I bought a huge Cleveland potato peeler in 1973....it would peel a 50# bag in about 3 minutes. Only problem was,one day the kid left it to do something else and when he returned, the potato's were the size of grapes and the whole 50# only filled a soup bowl.....couldn't help but laugh.The whole crew was in stitches.

Was Long Wood Farms owned by The Bickfords? The same Bickfords who are opening the new restaurant by Laconia Airport? I was good friends with a Bickford girl in grade school and I think one of her older siblings owned it. I could be wrong. If this is accurate and anyone knows where the younger sister, Jody, is please get her to join the forum. I would love to find out where she is.

What age was the Bickford girl? I am a relative of Hazen Bickford (b. 1927?)and don't know of any female relatives in Center Harbor. Hazen did have a brother Ode who lived across from the formely Ulm owned Center Harbor Sport Shop, now a wine and cheese place along with various other businesses.

Here name is Jody. I think it was her family but I could be wrong. That was back in the late 70's when I was 10 years old so I could be wrong and Longridge Farms may have had nothing to do with her family.

I think it was a place owned by a Dorothy Olewine. Might have been Dot's Restaurant (?). Take heart, Broadhopper...I am almost absolutely older than everyone on the forum, I'll bet!

I was taking a guess about the name. I didn't go there too much, but I think we are talking about the same place. Another place that was wonderful, and long gone like so many goodies, was St Jacques' on Weirs Blvd. In its "day", it was one of the best! Oh well, "y'all" up there can still get those really nice, lightly floured onion rings that seem to be uniquely New England... those kind are not happening here! I miss them.
