looking at a map of the area, the only boat ramp I see is the one right next to the boat house.

This is why anyone who lives near water should have a safety hammer in their car so that they can break the window or cut the seatbelt if they are trapped underwater. Such a tragedy.

I occasionally watch Adventures with a Purpose, they are on youtube, they use there skills to try and bring closure people who have missing love ones thought to have been lost in their cars underwater.
I bought this from them, its inexpensive and I drive by 20mi bay often and thought more so during the winter it would quiet easy to slide off the road onto the ice and down through it.

Wow, this is horrible news.....
It will be interesting to see if anymore comes out about this, I wonder if something like a mini stroke, or mild heart attack, was the root cause of the situation...

I believe the reserve firefighter was his neighbor who tried to help him by administering CPR...

Several years ago, the Dad of one of my brother's friends did the exact same thing. He was older than this man, (in his mid to late 80's), and went to Saturday evening Mass. It was in the winter, so it was dark when he left the church and he became confused and disoriented on his drive home and drove down a boat ramp into the cold ocean water and did not survive. Very sad.

1) WPLG-TV did a live study of a driver's escape from a car that had plunged into a canal. The EMT present said to roll down the windows, allow the water to fill the car, then exit by door or window.

The "victim" (news-anchor Dwight Lauderdale) followed directions, but couldn't escape the sunken car!

He'd forgotten to unbuckle his seat belt and was hanging outside the window.

Recovering his senses, he pulled himself back inside, unbuckled, and swam to the surface.

2) Driving down to my [Florida] street, there's the correct right turn, but 50-feet sooner, is a boat ramp. Especially at night, it's an easy mistake to signal one's intention to turn down the boat ramp!

3) That a vehicle can roll downslope under water shouldn't be surprising.

Now that everyone’s cars have automatic windows, this is a serious problem. We used to be able to roll our windows down, not anymore.

Supposedly the headrests are made so you can pull them out and smash the window if you need to. But, who would think of using them or even be able to get to them with a seatbelt on????

If you drive in... the vehicle generally traps air and has a short float period were you can remove your seatbelt and lower the window. Of course, if you weren't wearing a seatbelt, you may be unconscious.

If you went to OHRV/Snowmobile training, and your teacher was any good, they would be able to tell you that in the winter time... you have to open your eyes, follow the bubbles upward, and be aware to head for the brightest spot to avoid being trapped beneath the ice.

That works during the day... during the night, say a last prayer.

Even with the daylight, the shock of water temperature, and the drag of your clothing means that you may have only one small shot of ever pulling yourself back out onto the ice... and have to have the will of a bear to get your drained carcass to warms before hypothermia sets in.

There is lots of video of vehicles being pulled from the water with their wiper running and their lights on. I would assume that electric windows would work but, somehow, I know I don’t want to have to test that theory
