This was low speed, no injuries, no fuel spill. We heard the crunch and felt a tremor in the camp at about 9:30 last evening. A couple out for a slow evening cruise simply made a mistake in the dark.
MP arrived at about 10pm, they had been busy with two other accidents and there were no injuries here. MP stayed with the couple till Sea Tow arrived at about 11pm and then after ST left at about 11:30 MP took the couple away, I presume to their island camp based on direction. Very good of the MP to have stayed with them. (We did offer our camp to warm-up but they stayed with the MP officer on the boat). The 30' boat is resting on ledge the entire hull length. MP did attempt to pull the boat off the ledge but nothing doing. The ST guy assessed the situation and said he will come back in daylight to: inspect the hull and maybe try using airbags. I don't think it will be easy to get off the ledge. Hopefully the hull has not been compromised. In any case it will have been an expensive cruise, we did feel bad for them. |

by looking at the pictures, It looks like If trey hadn't run aground they would have ran smack Into the island. that could have been more serious

First and foremost: no injuries.
Secondly, thank goodness it was low speed, or has been said, there could have been another island resident on Welch's. Hopefully it can be floated off with little to no damage.

Boy, the pictures say a great deal about what was not going on aboard the boat that night. For example, if the radar was on, how could they possably have gotten so close to the island!! In addition to a depth finder, I suspect a boat that seize also had gps. Well, at least noone was hurt, hope the boat was not badly damaged.

We just got back to the island and the boat is gone. Must not have compromised the hull, they were lucky for that.

I don't like to criticize on this forum becuase someday those pictures may be me! However, I have to agree with the others, how did they ever end up so close to shore and not realize where they were. It would be interesting to hear this story so we can all learn from it.

ApreaMare, pricy little boat. And I know pricy and boat are oxymorons.

I bet this was playing on the radio too! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpGRdX5sUAs I actually saw the boat floating around just before the grounding, couldn't of been going more than 2 mph. He really did "rock her world"! ![]() Dan

I just looked up that boat. What beautiful boats and craftsmanship, but they cost more than my house did. A 2005 model used started at $299,000 and a 1998 used one was going for $110,000. I think if I had that much money tied up in a boat I'd have been a bit more careful with GPS, depth sounders and more. Especially at night and in a lake that has so many islands and rocks.

You know, the twist this thread has taken, while certainly entertaining is scary. If you feel the urge to do something other than pay attention where your boat is going while underway, turn off the engine, or take down the sail and go to town, don't endanger the rest of us.
A few years ago I was sailing near Center Harbor on a light wind day when I noticed a large, ocean going, tug type, expensive yacht bearing down on me. The captain was about 3 feet from the wheel, with his back toward his direction of travel, talking to his guests. It looked like he had been in this position for a long time. I was not able to move out of his path, luckily I had a canned air horn and nearly emptied the can before who I assume was his wife stood up to look and told him he was getting close to hitting me. He adjusted course and missed me. The big lake method of collision avoidance doesn't work, if you are under way pay attention. |

Now that I think of it. They were probably on their cell phones and were not paying attention. Just like car drivers.

Wow, this thread has taken a weird turn. As far as I can tell from this thread, this was a minor accident with no injuries.
Why all the guessing games and innuendo, is there a backstory here or just internet fun at work? |

Whole new meaning to "coming ashore". (That was just way too easy)
