Put my feeders out this past week
I thought I saw one yesterday in the early morning, but not sure. I saw the movement out of the corner of my eye, and by the time I focused, it was out of sight.
Mother's day has always been the key to me, at least here in Alton Bay.

Saw them for the first time May 5 last year so I had the feeder up and ready this weekend but I did not see any.

Nothing here, so much for the early migration. I expected them to be here after a week of sun and warmer temps. Keeping my eye out for "pickle" as we named him. Hopefully there are a couple "gherkins" this season!

NH Audubon Society's web site reports, "A ruby throated hummingbird was seen in Manchester on April 27". With this week's weather, they must be here by now. I hung a couple of feeders this morning. (fingers crossed).

I was standing in the driveway at home on Snday andas we were talking I was pretty sure I heard the buzz/drone of one very close but I did not actually see it. You know the Bumble Bee sound......I put my feeder out just in case though. My cat loves to sit there and watch them.....You should see it when the female cat launches herself at the feeder but hits the screen instead...... I know. I'm cruel.

My cat does the same thing with Squirrels. I will even throw some old bread out on the deck and she watches as the squirrels come up and eat the bread. It is like they know the cats can't get them. But my cat still tries....So much so sometimes she loses some hair off the bridge of her nose. You'd think she would learn. Eventually she does.......

My first 2013 hummingbird sighting!
This morning, at the feeder by the back door... I went out to uncover my poor freezing plant babies, and nearly ran smack into it! Thought maybe I scared it away for the season, but she was back again a short while later.

Caught this guy at my feeder this morning..
Both the female and male have been at the feeder for the last few days.
Managed to get a halfway decent shot of the male this morning before the heavy rain. I think it's the same pair that were here last year, not because I recognize them , but because they are nesting in the same exact tree that the pair from last year nested in... with all of the trees we have, I find it hard to believe a separate pair would use the same spot in the same tree.

I had two buzzing wildly in and around my cherry tree a few days ago. I figured it was the male who has been hanging around chasing another hummingbird from "his" feeders. Then they both landed on the same branch and let's just say they were definitely NOT fighting. Can't say I've ever seen that before...

Return of the Hummers
During the past week, we saw a humming bird visit our hanging feeder on our cottage porch on East Bear Island. It was great seeing that they have returned.

They're back
I powerwashed the deck last weekend and when I was done, I was clearing the water from the nozzle over the edge of the deck. There was a streal of water coming out and I looked down and there was a hummingbird taking a shower. He was literally flying under the stream. He was there for about a minute and then flew off. I put out the feeder and within 1/2 hour, I had 2 of them feeding

Another great hummingbird shot
A friend of mine took this shot (not using tripod) at his home in Plymouth. You can even see the little hummingbird's tongue!

Nectar - how long?
The hot weather has me wondering about the nectar in the feeders. We have a couple that are in the direct sun for a good part of the day.
We're using premixed stuff from local hardware tore and have recycled the bottle it came in, so I can't read their recommendations. Do you replace the nectar that's been out there for a week, or do you just add new to the old? |

I wasn't getting good results with the store bought premixed nectar. Someone told me that the birds prefer a mix that you make yourself. 1 cup cane sugar and 4 cups water. Bring the mix to a boil and cool in the refrig. For some reason the birds insist that the mix be boiled. You do not need any red coloring. This works fine for me. I do change the nectar every week and I clean out the feeder and replace with fresh nectar.

Hummingbird nectar
I make the nectar for the hummingbirds - and change it out every 3 or 4 days. If it sits in the sun - it will ferment - and you can kill them, which nobody wants to have happen. I don't have a very big feeder so i make up 1 cup water to one-quarter cup sugar (basic recipe is 4 to 1). Have been making the nectar for ages - the stuff in the stores is too expensive! You don't really need to add coloring, as long as there is some color associated with the feeder. The top to my feeder is red and they are attracted to the colors of the flowers in the yard also.

Thanks
My feeders get plenty of sun, so they may have turned the nectar into high-test... I'll clean them out and try the 4:1 home brew approach.

Agree with the home brew. They are just as happy if it is not boiled. Does not seem logical that it is needed to kill bacteria, although I have read this.

Hummingbird Home Brew
We used the above-described home brew at our cottage on East Bear Island. Upon arrival last weekend, I noticed that no hummers were visiting. I washed the black specks from the feeder, and then added fresh brew. The small visitors returned soon thereafter!!!

We use the same feeder and store bought solution as in SteveA's pic and we have hummingbirds everyday, all day long. I keep forgetting to get my camera ready but they are always there and have been all summer...

last visitor for 2013?
Things have been pretty quiet around the feeder for the past week, so we were surprised to see a visitor chowing down at 8:00 this morning...temperature on that side of the house was a chilly 37 degrees! I filled up the feeder with the last of my homebrew 3 days ago. Now I'm wondering if I should make more. Does anyone know when the last hummingbirds are typically seen here?

Up here on Alton Mountain we are getting between 4 and 5 all day long. That number comes with them around the feeder at the same time. Refilled this afternoon. The 22nd is when they seem to disappear from this household.

The last one I saw around my house in Meredith was a week ago today. Feeders are still up just in case...

Ya, we write it down every year so we can see how close each year and we also use the weather station to put down temp/humidity before and after to see if they have any connection also. We will take ours down this weekend, because very few were seen today and there is plenty of flowers in the yard that they can tank up on as the stragglers come through.
