Bit by a dog at hannaford in Meredith!
Hi all,
So I wanted to tell you all my experience at the Meredith Hannaford the other day. My friend and I drove in with our 2 young children when we noticed 5 little brown dogs running loose in the corner of the parking lot. They were obviously going to get hit or cause problems so I decided to get out while my friend parked and try and guide the dogs out of the way. That's when I noticed the Toyota camry hatchback at the side of the building with its driver’s side door wide open. Well the women was sitting in her car looking down and completely ignoring the fact that her dogs were running loose. So I tried to guide them out of the way when 1 of the dogs bit me twice! Enough to break skin and bruise but not draw blood. So I decided to leave. I went back to my friends car to get my daughter I saw the women coming around to the front of the building. So I decided to confront her to let her know what happened. Well after trying to get her attention, very politely, from about 1 foot away "excuse me mamme, excuse me mamme...are those your dogs?" she completely ignored me and kept walking as if I wasn't even there! So I told the women at the customer service desk and she encouraged me to call the police since they rent the building and couldn’t do anything. So I did. When the police arrived and I was telling him what happened the women came back outside with her groceries. She got very angry and couldn't believe that the police were called. Did I do the right thing? I think so!!! I felt that it was the right thing to do because it very well could have been a child that got bit if they were too close...or even worse, their face. Come to find out by one of the employees that this is not the first time she has caused a disturbance with her dogs letting them run loose and he said that something needs to be done. Then I told my friends and one of them said that the same lady was at heaths and it happened there too! I didn't know if anyone else has seen this women and if not...don't go near the dogs! |

From what you've shared here, you did the right thing.
NH has lots of freedoms, but there's still a Leash Law in NH, and as much as some people like to think it's nasty or not their business, there's also a law that says you must pick up after your pooch when he poo's. Allowing dogs to run free, like you described here, is dangerous for the dogs and people. Period. What if a child is bitten? Or what if you became sick from the dog bite? What if one of the dogs was hit by a car? No, I think you did the right thing. Absolutely. |

Rude dog owner!
I believe there is a leash law in Meredith... so nobody's dog should be out running around. At any rate, I hope you got the particulars (name, license #, etc) of the rude dog owner... because you should sue her! Can she prove her dogs are up to date on rabies vaccinations? I have a friend whose dog bit a person familiar to the dog, not a stranger ... not in Meredith, but Moultonboro. The fellow had a more significant bite, because it did draw blood. He had to go to ER, get shots, the bite got infected anyway, etc etc. My friends paid for all expenses, but they are extremely lucky the bitten fellow didn't sue them. The dog must now and forever wear a muzzle that allows dog to drink water, but cannot bite-even when dog is on home property (which is where incident occurred originally). I would freak if a dog bit me or a child!!! Totally unacceptable behavior.

I think we has an experience with this woman too. A weird person who thinks her dogs come before anyone else's interests or property. Glad you called for the police. Natt's wife

I can't understand why the police did not give her a citation. Too many people take their dogs to stores and leave them in the car. They scare the devil out of me when I walk by their car and they slam againt an open window.
I love dogs, but never took one with me when I went shopping. |

Natts wife...Weird would absolutely be one of the words I would use to describe her. Everytime I tell this story someone else says they have seen her and have a similar story.
I was just beside myself that she walked right by me as I confronted her..That is what put me over the edge. I'm not sure what the cop did after I left. He gave me the option of going to the station and doing all that stuff or he would make her aware of the fines involved, so on so forth. I went with that option. But when I did pull out of the parking lot about 5 minutes later the cop was still there talking to her with her drivers side door open. So I’m guessing he was taking a look at the dogs as well and hopefully checking their rabies tags? My biggest issue is that I do have 2 very small children (age 4 and 2) and 99% of the time I shop with them by myself so if we happened to walk near these dogs my child would have been bitten for sure! |

I do not know the laws in NH pertaining to dog bites, but I have always been under the assumption to believe that the owner is responsible for the dog and its actions. It doesn't matter if it was on a leash or not. If it isn't upto date on its shots, is a whole different ball game for the owner.

quarrantine?
Sorry to hear of that experience. My husband was bitten once while running here in CT and the dog had to be quarantined for more than a week to make sure it didn't have rabies. I am pretty sure it was vaccinated, but that was the law. I am a dog lover too, but I hate it when other people allow their dogs to run unleashed to jump, trip or bite you! Unfortunately CT does not have a leash law, arrgh!

What type of car and dogs?
I would dearly love to know what type/color car the dog owner drives, and what type of dogs... the better to avoid her.
Are they all brown? Maybe Dachsunds? Are they brown/white? Maybe Jack Russell terriers? My sister used to have two Dachsund mix breeds, and they were always yapping and jumping all over me. Now, my daughter has two Boston terriers. AARRGGHH. They are the most ill mannered little beasts. I never wear nice clothing to their house, because the darn dogs' claws have ripped my trousers... |

Worst dog owners ever...
Even in the peaceful, non-urban surrounds of The Lakes Region, my current opinion of irresponsible dog owners is defined by the Dianne Whipple case in San Francisco. Google it! and see how true evil can be manifest through an animal.

while this might be a little topic, what is up with people being all of a sudden allowed to bring pets into stores. It is everywhere and all types of stores
It drives me nuts, and I am a pet lover i think you did the right thing as well considering you tried to speak to her first.

Jniff, did the dog bite really break the skin, did the dog's saliva touch your blood? Is there any chance you where exposed to rabies?
If not treated in the first few days, rabies is 100% deadly. If your skin was broken and you could see you own blood, you have risk. I would see a doctor today. It's your life, and once you have symptoms it's may be too late. I don't want to be an alarmist but you absolutely need to call the Meredith police today and find out the women's name. You have find out if the dogs have current rabies vacinations. You need to see this for yourself. |

Well let’s see if I can remember all the questions....
The dogs were all golden brown about 15-20lbs each (ankle biters) literally...most of them had short-med. length straight fur but the one that bit me was female, because the owner referred to her as that, and was very short tight curly hair. I have an English bulldog so I'm not too familiar with little dog breeds. I guess I should have had him with me..he would have had a lovely snack The women was in her 60s I'd say with shoulder length hair white/blond with the reddest cheeks I've ever seen. She was driving a beige Toyota camry le hatchback. License plate # 291 3239
The bite marks never drew blood. Looked more like if you scuff you shin and your skin peels and bruises...It happened on Saturday so if I was infected with anything I would already know it...I hope? |

Too bad you didn't have a roll of duct tape with you. I would have wrapped that muzzle with a whole roll......and then stuck it to a wall somewhere.
Good thing that wasn't me. I don';t think I would have been so patient. I would have had the cops on the phone ASAP, and have them collect the dogs, until she could show her vaccination/license papers for each dog. |

You need to get back to Police.
To be told by employee we rent, is true but certainly they have a great deal of involvement in the parking lot. Their shopping cart corals are in parking lot. If employee was the manager, I think an inexcusable response. Any market should have concern for customer's well being. |

I have read that your chances of avoiding a rabies infection is greatly increased if you wash with soap and water immediately. But... This is no substitute for prompt medical attention which would include getting the dogs vaccination history.
There is a new shot you can be given that is less painful and has fewer side-effects than the traditional treatment but there may be a window of opportunity for it. Call your doctor and get a copy of the police report. Find out if ALL those dogs had shots in case you ID'd the wrong one. The good news is that rabies in domestic dogs is almost unheard of now. But my advice is to not play the odds in this. Good luck! |

A couple of years ago I had the rabies shots. It is true, they are not painful like they used to be and they are not in the stomach as I heard they used to be. I had a series of 4 all at once and then 3 every week I think it was. It used to be for 4 weeks as I remember. I had the first shots in Maine and it cost almost ten thousand dollars. The others were only about 300 each as I recall. Even though my insurance said they covered rabies shots they gave me a hard time. They covered all but about 1200$.

You may have seen my wife and daughter with a yellow lab in some of the stores around the lake. We're raising a Guiding Eyes puppy and she doesn't yet have a vest to prove it. Since she's not yet a service dog the store owners don't technically have to allow her in but most have no problem with it when we ask.

Wow-expensive shots!
Wow. $10K for rabies shots??? I am thunderstruck by the cost... but really, please, take this to the next step-get police report, etc., it's been like a week already ... and yes, we DO mean to be alarmist.

I was thunderstruck too! I had it in So. Maine Med. Center because Huggins didn't have enough. But I know someone else who had their first series at Huggins and it was almost half the price. I never could figure out why. I had the last shots at Huggins.

It's one thing to bring your dog into a pet store or other building that okays them being there - as long as they're well-behaved and on a leash. I like taking my Tanker into PetCo and similar stores when we're out shopping because it gives him something to look forward to while we're out (like taking a kid into Toys'R'Us.) And it helps to keep him well-socialized in the winter when we can't walk as much. |

This is taken from the website linked below.
Although dog bites are a common cause of rabies in developing countries, there have been no reports of rabies caused by dog bites in the United States for a number of years due to widespread animal vaccination. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002310/

update
The officer finally got back to me yesterday. Very nice man btw. He said that he didn't realize that the dog had broken skin otherwise he would have done a deeper investigation. I did tell him but I was rudely cut off by this women when she came around the corner. He told me that he did have a long conversation with the women and she tried to lead the conversation the whole time, but he made it clear that that was not going to happen. He notified the police in the town that she is from (Moultonboro Neck rd) Same rd. that I live on eek! The police knew exactly who she was as soon as he said her name. They were not up to date on their shots come to find out but they have had their rabies shots in the past. The women said she was in the middle of getting an appointment for them (yea right). I will be contacting the Moultonboro Police this week.
On another note...A friend of mine works at the pet store in Center Harbor and said that they had a run in with this women as well. I'll try and make the story quick...She went in to buy a parrot and they put it in a box with holes. About an hour later she came back asking if they had insurance for the bird or if they had a return policy. Confused the employee asked why. Well the intelligent women decided to do some shopping at heaths after purchasing the bird. So what did she do? Well she left the bird in her car with her 5 nasty dogs. When she returned to her car, yup you guessed it, the bird was ripped to shreds!!!! The women demanded a new bird for free! What a nut job. Back to the subject. I did go to my doctor and she gave me tetanus(sp) shot and said that with the time that has past and since I didn't bleed, and other reasons that I can't remember the rabies shot would not be necessary. I hope she's right. Thank you everyone for your concern. |

What?????????
I am absolutely horrified after reading this! Did the pet shop report this incident to the Police? This behavior most certainly qualifies as animal cruelty, and as such, should have been prosecuted. What is described is disgraceful and sickening behavior! I am very interested in knowing if this was reported to the authorities.

Reminds me of a Monty Python Skit....
Dead Parrot Sketch
The cast: MR. PRALINE John Cleese SHOP OWNER Michael Palin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The sketch: A customer enters a pet shop. Mr. Praline: 'Ello, I wish to register a complaint. (The owner does not respond.) Mr. Praline: 'Ello, Miss? Owner: What do you mean "miss"? Mr. Praline: I'm sorry, I have a cold. I wish to make a complaint! Owner: We're closin' for lunch. Mr. Praline: Never mind that, my lad. I wish to complain about this parrot what I purchased not half an hour ago from this very boutique. Owner: Oh yes, the, uh, the Norwegian Blue...What's,uh...What's wrong with it? Mr. Praline: I'll tell you what's wrong with it, my lad. 'E's dead, that's what's wrong with it! Owner: No, no, 'e's uh,...he's resting. Mr. Praline: Look, matey, I know a dead parrot when I see one, and I'm looking at one right now. Owner: No no he's not dead, he's, he's restin'! Remarkable bird, the Norwegian Blue, idn'it, ay? Beautiful plumage! Mr. Praline: The plumage don't enter into it. It's stone dead. Owner: Nononono, no, no! 'E's resting! Mr. Praline: All right then, if he's restin', I'll wake him up! (shouting at the cage) 'Ello, Mister Polly Parrot! I've got a lovely fresh cuttle fish for you if you show... (owner hits the cage) Owner: There, he moved! Mr. Praline: No, he didn't, that was you hitting the cage! Owner: I never!! Mr. Praline: Yes, you did! Owner: I never, never did anything... Mr. Praline: (yelling and hitting the cage repeatedly) 'ELLO POLLY!!!!! Testing! Testing! Testing! Testing! This is your nine o'clock alarm call! (Takes parrot out of the cage and thumps its head on the counter. Throws it up in the air and watches it plummet to the floor.) Mr. Praline: Now that's what I call a dead parrot. Owner: No, no.....No, 'e's stunned! Mr. Praline: STUNNED?!? Owner: Yeah! You stunned him, just as he was wakin' up! Norwegian Blues stun easily, major. Mr. Praline: Um...now look...now look, mate, I've definitely 'ad enough of this. That parrot is definitely deceased, and when I purchased it not 'alf an hour ago, you assured me that its total lack of movement was due to it bein' tired and shagged out following a prolonged squawk. Owner: Well, he's...he's, ah...probably pining for the fjords. Mr. Praline: PININ' for the FJORDS?!?!?!? What kind of talk is that?, look, why did he fall flat on his back the moment I got 'im home? Owner: The Norwegian Blue prefers keepin' on it's back! Remarkable bird, id'nit, squire? Lovely plumage! Mr. Praline: Look, I took the liberty of examining that parrot when I got it home, and I discovered the only reason that it had been sitting on its perch in the first place was that it had been NAILED there. (pause) Owner: Well, o'course it was nailed there! If I hadn't nailed that bird down, it would have nuzzled up to those bars, bent 'em apart with its beak, and VOOM! Feeweeweewee! Mr. Praline: "VOOM"?!? Mate, this bird wouldn't "voom" if you put four million volts through it! 'E's bleedin' demised! Owner: No no! 'E's pining! Mr. Praline: 'E's not pinin'! 'E's passed on! This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'im to the perch 'e'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!! THIS IS AN EX-PARROT!! (pause) Owner: Well, I'd better replace it, then. (he takes a quick peek behind the counter) Sorry squire, I've had a look 'round the back of the shop, and uh, we're right out of parrots. Mr. Praline: I see. I see, I get the picture. Owner: I got a slug. (pause) Mr. Praline: Pray, does it talk? Owner: Nnnnot really. Mr. Praline: WELL IT'S HARDLY A BLOODY REPLACEMENT, IS IT?!!???!!? Owner: N-no, I guess not. (gets ashamed, looks at his feet) Mr. Praline: Well. (pause) Owner: (quietly) D'you.... d'you want to come back to my place? Mr. Praline: (looks around) Yeah, all right, sure. |

I'm sorry, I'm a HUGE Monty Python fan too but this thread is not a place to post these.
The terror that poor bird had to go through while it was being ripped apart is haunting. Yes, I own parrots and they are beautiful, intelligent creatures. This woman should have been arrested for animal cruelty when she "returned" the parrot. |

Oh please....
This thread is hilarious at so many levels. How many posts suggesting they'd shoot the dogs (or was it the lady -- or both!). So hard to tell. But adding the parrot to the story-line really was right out of a Monty Python skit.
Don't get me wrong. I love pets. I have several in fact. No intent to offend. But this was funny. If it bothers you, runaway runaway!! |

You are off base mink islander. That was terrible for that nice bird...I remember it from the pet store. And I agree, she should be prosecuted for animal cruelty (for the parrot). It is not the dogs fault, it is the owner. Beware if you live near Long Point Road, this is a big problem waiting to happen.

And those are not the only dogs she has, she raises those dogs for sale. I don't know if she has a kennel there or what.

I ask you Mink...what personal gain do I have to make up stories like this? I'll tell you, none. Yes it sounds ridiculous and crazy but that's because no one in their right mind would do something like this. The women is a nut job and needs to be held accountable for her actions.

This woman should be reported to the humane society, for starters. She obviously was negligent in her care of the bird and I have the impression she's an animal hoarder. |

I actually have the "great pleasure" of living on Long Point Rd not too far from this psycho, and I see her every day up to 4 times a day running her dogs behind her car down the road! On one occasion I turned onto Kona Farm and almost hit them...they were everywhere all over both sides of the road. I did call the police dept. and was told by the officer that as long as she had her dogs under control there was nothing they could do about it under the "leash law". Well, I'm sorry but if your dogs are running all over the road while you are driving your car they are not on a leash (that's what I thought leash law meant) and they are NOT under your control! Hopefully someone will step in and help these poor little dogs that I see every day running as fast as they can down the road to keep up with her! We must speak for them as they cannot speak for themselves! As for the girl that was bit...I hope all is well with you. You did everything right it's the PD that needs to step up to the plate!

Bad woman with dogs
First, I was so horrified of the tale of this nasty woman buying a bird, and then putting the bird in a enclosed situation where her dogs tore it to shreds, i could barely speak. Weekend of April 9-I went and spoke to owner of pet store in CH, he verified that is what happened, and the woman came back into the pet store to demand he replace the slaughtered bird. He kicker out of the store, and hopefully she will not be allowed back. The folks in the liquor store don't have anythng good to say aboaut her either. The woman's real name is SHARRIE.... she has about wine, drunk some of it and returned it to the liquor store - expecting to be refunded. She must have a screw loose. However, the real bottom line here is that this woman is an abuser of animals who puts the public at risk. How can we band together to put a stop to her barbaric behavior? I will gladly lead the charge, just need direction and support her.

Conveniently enough my sister is a para-legal and is very good at what she does. She is based in Kentucky right now but she has been in contact with authorities here. This is what we got in response…
I am forwarding this to both the Meredith Police Chief as they responded and also the Moultonborough Town Clerk/ and Police Chief as that is where she is living. I hope they are able to help with this matter. If you don’t hear from someone on this please let me know as I will try to follow up. Not only have I witnessed this woman "running" her dogs but I have almost hit them on numerous occasions. Today I saw her on Greene's Basin Rd. with these dogs chasing her car as she stopped at the end by Moultonboro Neck Rd. My question is what is going to happen when god forbid someone does hit one of her dogs and it is going to be the fault of the driver who hit the dog. These dogs are NOT under the leash law and she DOES NOT have control over these dogs at all. They are usually running all over Long Point Rd. and myself and another vehicle had to stop and wait at least 30 seconds the other day waiting for them to get in her car because they were all over the road. Not only am I concerned about the welfare of these dogs but the safety of the drivers in this town. When is something going to be done about this?? When someone has to swerve to miss the dogs and crashes into a tree? Lets get this woman to stop doing this to keep herself, her dogs and everyone else safe!!

Where are the police in this place? Don't they do anything about the lease law? Maybe its time for the state animal control department, or whatever they are, to be brought in.

Moultonborough Leash Law
Moultonborough has a leash law but there is some wiggle room regarding what the definition of control is.

Can a neighbor of this lady, or the person who started this thread, contact the ASPCA or the humane society with this issue?
Or let's gang up and bust those dogs free I fully believe that there are no "bad dogs", just bad, neglectful, irresponsible owners.

Did call them
Talked to the humane society. As long as she is feeding them and providing them with shelter and water, there is nothing that can be done for the dogs. She is not "harming" them physically, though they probably need a doggie psychologist!

Obviously a dog bite is serious. As a delivery person I stopped counting the dog bites at one dozen. And that was early in my career.
A very large percentage of dog owners don't have a clue how to train a dog. From uncontrollable barking to dog fighting to actually biting strangers AND family members. I just have to laugh when I go shopping and park next to an expensive car or SUV with one or two dogs and the dogs are jumping, growling, scratching, drooling - uncontrolably. And, by the way, ruining the interior of that expansive car/SUV. Don't these people know that a dog can be trained not to do this? And as far as I am concerned anyone with more then one dogs is nuts. Sorry to all you wonderful people who think that two dogs is twice as good as one dog. Or that the other dog needs a playmate. If the other dog needs a playmate, then YOU should be walking the dog more often and spending more quality time with the dog. Now on to Monty Python. Well, these guys will go down in history as one of the greatest comedy groups ever. Maybe the Dead Parrot Sketch is not appropriate while discussing dog bite. But it is darn funny. But in the end I have found that mentioning control or training to a dog owner about their dog gets them more upset then mentioning how they raise their children. So I will probably be jumped upon for stating my views here. |

I have a neighbor who owns an old collector car. I generally like this guy. I went over there one day when he was working under the car trying to fix something. His dog did not appreciate my presence and was barking incessantly.
After yelling at the dog to SHUT UP..Without Results..my neighbor got out from under the car and went over and KICKED the dog in the chest..I could hear the impact. I lost ALL respect for that neighbor. I honestly believe some people have dogs...just to CONTROL them. Not necessarily about abuse.... It's just about CONTROL... of another living thing that will conform...A Dog doesn't know any better and loves you no matter how you treat them.. NB Last edited by NoBozo; 04-26-2011 at 09:35 AM. Wow, talk about misinformation. Although it is true that Kimberly Guilfoyle is currently a Fox news contributor, she was NOT the plaintiff in the tragic Dianne Whipple case. The plaintiffs were two attorneys, Marjorie Knoller and Robert Noel and Fox's Kimberly Guilfoyle was the ADA/prosecutor. Also, while it is true that one of the plaintiffs (Knoller) was paroled after 4 years, that parole was revoked On August 23, 2010 when the First District Court of Appeal in San Francisco ruled 3-0 that the plaintiff Knoller acted with a conscious disregard for human life when her dogs killed Diane Whipple. Knoller is currently serving a sentence of 15 years to life.

I think I had a run in today with whom I believe is Dog woman and the terrible 5-6.
I was at Lowe's getting some replacement plants for my mole garden, when up runs these 5 brown dogs. At first I didn't put two and two together, but when one came up and started barking at me, I remembred this story.... Is this them? Can it be a coincidence? |

I am very sorry to read about these dogs. It hurts those of us who are responsible dog owners. We take our dogs almost everywhere with us too, and the more people are like this woman, the less people will allow dogs. When we go somewhere we are often told how well behaved our dogs are. They say they are even better than lots of kids. Of course we are usually holding them----

The pictures that have been posted ARE the dogs!! They are mini poodles and pomeranians. This woman was driving down Long Point Rd. the other day with the dogs running behind her and stopped in front of my kids babysitters house...my kids and the babysitters son were playing in the front yard and she looked at them and called them stupid and then as she was getting the dogs in her car looked right at them and preceeded to say "Damn kids" as she drove away! A friend of mine also had a run in with her on Veasy Shores Rd. in Meredith where she saw the dogs but NO SIGN of any car. She stopped and the dogs tried to get in to her car...shortly after the woman pulls up from WAY down there street (and out of eye sight) and told MY friend to watch out for her dogs and "can't you see??" I'm sorry but this is getting REALLY out of hand and if these dogs are not under the leash law, which they are not, then the people are going to have to take matters into their own hands because I'm tired of some whack job thinking she can have her misbehaving, BITING dogs run where SHE pleases!

I believe she is breeding them because a couple of them have been seen running with "diapers" on so I am thinking they are females in heat. I have reported her to the authorities and they are going to try to catch her in the act so please if anyone sees her "running" these dogs please call the Moultonboro Police department at 603-476-2400!
