I know that as forum members we post how well we like various restaurants and there is even a thread called "Menus" where menus are posted. But I don't see too many owners of these restaurants advertising because it is against forum rules.
I'm not trying to be the forum police but when is it OK to advertise your establishment in this forum and when is not OK?

Below is what it says in the Forum "FAQ" section:

To post messages and pictures you must agree to the rules and policies detailed below.

Winnipesaukee Forums

• Your question or comment must be relevant to Lakes Region tourism, activities or topics.
Advertisements (including lost & found) of any kind are not allowed.
• Do not post in ALL CAPS. Messages posted in all caps will either be converted to lower case or deleted.
• Do not post any material which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, slanderous, inaccurate, abusive, obscene, racist, hateful, harassing, sexually explicit, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise in violation of any law.
• Do not reprint copyrighted articles without the owner's consent.
• If you don't agree with something expressed on the Forum respond with your opinion, don't get personal! Your comments and opinions are welcome, personal attacks, insults or flames are not.
• No "trolling" (trying to start arguments and upset people)!
• No "flooding" (posting messages so numerous that they overwhelm a thread)!

At the beginning I would have agreed with you Rusty and yes it can get annoying but with the way the economy is these days many of the small business owners are just trying to get by so putting a quick plug in about your business doesn't bother me. Baygo does seem to take advantage of every chance he gets to put a plug in about his business but as a small business owner myself it is hard not to do the same. Just my 2 cents

Our webmaster Don has stated in the past that Baygo's response is perfectly acceptable. He does not want a restaurant owner starting a thread like "we have the best pizza in the LR" but is fine with responses to queries.

That works for me.

IMHO it sure is a good way to get free advertising.

Can you imagine what this would do if all restaurant owners took advange of this freebie.

Example: I start a thread called "Good steak in the Lakes Region" and then maybe around 100 lakes region restaurants post how good their steaks are and then post their website.

Maybe the rule should be changed to "Advertisements (including lost & found) of any kind are not allowed (unless answering to a query)"

If you look closer you'll read that I was answering a question:

I've done my advertising on this forum by paying for a banner.

Thanks "baygo"!

Sorry to use you as an example but I was just wondering how to interpret the forum rules for advertising.

This happens constantly on the forum. The "forum favorites" get a "thank you for the information" while other restaurants that are not as loved by forum members, get reprimanded. There is a double standard here. I'm not going to name the favorites that get away with talking about there specials and whats going on at their establishments, but forum members constantly show favoritisim.

Espo, I understand your point, but frankly the reason that some restaurants are favorites of forum members is because they are good at what they do. We are a discriminating bunch that way!

I was going to make that exact same point VitaBene. The favorites of forum members are usually those restaurants that are good dining establishments. I can assure you that I have no personal connection to any owner of any restaurant in the area. I have my "favorites," The Village Kitchen, Bobhouse, Lyons Den, and now Tavern 27 to name a few are my favorites because of hugely positive experiences at these establishments.

It's pretty simple, if you do a good job and please your customers you will end up with great reviews and positive comments. There is no conspiracy at work here.

So it's ok for an establishement to advertise and talk about what they are up to on the forum, as long as it is a place that you like? Ok, I get it now.

No, according to the OWNER of this website it is OK for business owners to respond to questions from members.

You are right "VitaBene". The webmaster stated that stand alone ad’s are not permitted but replies to service questions are OK.

This below response from the webmaster is in the site support forum section and the thread name is “Soliciting threads”:

The "Errands" thread has been removed. When I spot or someone reports this kind of stand alone ad it is deleted. That kind of advertising is not allowed on the forum.

However, it is perfectly OK for contractors or other service providers to reply to questions and offer their services. If someone is looking for a plumber I would expect plumbers to reply and say "I'm great, use me". Some self-promotion is expected in replies like that and I don't consider them advertisements. Connecting contractors and customers is an important function of the Home Improvement section.

When a new member posts a question and a business replies I carefully check their IP and host information to make sure they are not the same person. That has happened a few times but is very rare.

As a general rule, contractors and other service providers should not start threads but are welcome to reply
.”
