The Mount - Then and Now
I recently found a 35mm color slide I took of the M/V Mount Washington in 1973. The Mount was lengthened by 25 feet in 1982, and other significant changes were made to her windows and deck layout as well. After being lengthened, she was given the designation M.S. Mount Washington. (You can read about her history at the CruiseNH.Com's website.)
Below is a scanned image of the slide I took of the M/V Mount Washington in 1973, compared to a recent photo of the M.S. Mount Washington (the "recent" photo was taken in 2002.) Note how different she looks today compared to 32 years ago. The M/V Mount Washington in 1973 The M.S. Mount Washington Today Addendum: After posting the two photos above, I located a third picture taken in 1976. As you can see, the upper decks have been extended fore and aft, even before the 25' section was added to the middle of the hull. The M/V Mount Washington in 1976

As a kid growing up on the lake during the summers of the 50's and 60's, and seeing the Mount from Camp Lawrence or our place in Glendale, I was surprised to see how much she had changed from then to now. Somehow, I had forgotten just how much of the Mount was open to the weather in those earlier years. Thanks for the memories!

The mounts
Two great views showing all the details of the Mounts. The upper decks have so much more space as well. I have yet to take a summer cruise.. I did a shake down cruise a couple of years ago, but have not been on her since. Maybe this year.

The Mount - Better Than Ever
Have you ever gone back to something from your childhood and been disappointed because it didn't measure up to your memories? It just wasn't as good or seemed much smaller than you remembered. Not so with the Mount -she gets better and bigger with age!

The Horn Meaures Up!
I think that of all my "Mount Memories" over the years, the funniest was the time when my twin daughters were barely toddlers, and we were loitering around the Wolfeboro docks while the Mount was discharging and loading passengers. As she cast off to continue the cruise, the Captain sounded the horn. My girls, not expecting such a blast, were so jolted by the booming horn that they both immediately fell flat on their butts and started crying.
And, yes, I remind them of this nearly every time we are down at the docks...even though they are now pushing 14 years old...

Mount
Although it's not much of a Mount picture, I've always liked this one...

Grant, you got the URL and the title reversed Mount Passing Rattlesnake I remember taking my wife and young sons to The Lake for their first time several years ago. I had told my wife about The Mount. I expected it to look smaller than the boat I cruised on as a kid with my cousins. I couldn't believe it looked so BIG! It was a few years after that before I found out about it being lengthened. Thanks DRH, your pix brought back fond memories of my first cruise as a kid and my kids first cruise.

The Mount Being Lengthened
I came across this old newspaper clipping I cut out when the Mount was lengthened in 1982. According to the caption under the photo, the Mount was cut in half on October 30, 1982.

Amazing
I have always found it amazing that she was extended that way. The picture is wonderful.
I wonder is any pictures exist of the cutting, and the building of the new parts. Thanks for posting this, DRH.

Mt. Washington
DRH & IG,
The same picture was on the centerfold of the NY Daily News in 1982. I was shocked when a co-worker came over to my desk and said "Isn't this on the lake where you vacation?". The caption in the clipping I have said that the new midsection was built in Bath, Me and transported to the lake to be added amidship. |

Too bad the mount isn’t an unsinkable Boston Whaler. They could have launched the two halves and made an advertisement of them remaining afloat.
