Recently I've found myself having to scroll down while reading posts by users who have animated avatars. It's the strangest thing, but the movement of the image triggers vertigo for me. I've suffered with vertigo for the past 11 years, and often find myself having to look away from the television screen as well, particularly if there is a scene shot from a moving vehicle of any kind. I'm wondering if anyone else has this happen to them?

You must be sending out vibes Pepper. I just finished reading a post by Broadhopper and was looking at the moving propeller and said to myself "I'm getting dizzy"
Then I see your post and can't believe you wrote about moving avatars. Sorry it affects you so badly, I'm naturally dizzy anyway. I couldn't in all good conscience advocate for no moving avatars because some are fascinating, but maybe there is way to filter pictures from your side or an option that Don could turn on.

If you want me to remove the 'spinner', I can find another avatar. Like maybe Tinker Belle flying all over your screen!

Just hit your escape key, or the "stop" button next to the address bar.

Thanks Kamper - I'll do some research and see if I can't figure this out. There must be a way!

Pepper, I use a Mac and the Esc key worked for me. If I hit Esc with the cursor anywhere on the page it stops the animation. It worked using Firefox as a browser but it did not work using Safari, that might be the problem.

Thanks Tom! I use Safari, so that explains why the esc key didn't work. I'm still researching, and I'm sure I'll come up with the answer sooner or later.

Unfortunately there is no way to stop animated GIF's in Safari.

Sure there is! You just place your thumb over it!
I mean, honestly, if I can't see it, it must have stopped, no?

You probably think the light in your refrigerator goes out whenever you close the door also.

Pepper, I am also troubled with vertigo, so know what you are speaking of. No laughing matter. Motion of all kinds can set it off and videos with cameras scanning the landscape is a particular problem. I close my eyes when something like that appears on TV to avoid the dizziness that comes within a few minutes. I have been told that moving or flashing objects on computers can trigger seizures with people who suffer from epilepsy. I am not in the medical profession so don't know whether this is true or not.

Chickie, such things can indeed trigger seizures. Many years ago the Japanese cartoon version of Pokemon had to be completely revamped for this exact reason, as it was causing children to have seizures. For me, flashing lights, or fast-moving camera images often cause me to close my eyes or look away, lest I suddenly have a spinning head.

Pepper,
I have an imbalance that is the aftereffects of cemo. It comes and going. About 2 weeks ago I went for a boat ride in rough weather and when I got off the boat I had a problem walking on a floating dock(This has been normal). When I got to dry land, I still did not have my “land legs”. That evening I felt strange but the next day I have no imbalance. I haven’t had it since and am walking better. Boating can be a cure for many things. Try riding in the broads on a weekend. Soon to be a NH boater only.
