Default Looking for a new barber !

Looking for a new barber !
Preferably a shop with more than one barber.

Current barber is very old, and VERY SLOWWWWW !
If there 2 customers ahead of you plan on at least an hour half wait, ridiculous!

Thanks for your recommendations.

Let’s not speak about Jack that way. HAHAHAH.
Many of us are in the same boat. Have tried four others around the Laconia area and went back to the old man on the last cut

They are all over the area.

You don't state whether you are in Alton or Meredith or Wolfeboro.

I prefer the old time barber. But each to their own.

I don't wait. If there is a line. Then I move onto the next one.

Last count - there were 4 barber shops in Meredith.

Find out the hours of operation. And be the first when shop opens.

Default Rick's in Meredith

When we're in Meredith for extended periods, my son and I like Rick's. Fun Fact: Rick doesn't own it anymore, Shawn does. Anyway, Grant was our go-to barber. If he wasn't available, Mikaila was also very good. Both young and can do anything from a basic scissors cut, (which is what I get), to the fades with the clippers.

Agree. Most of the barbers in the area have gone to on line appointments only. No walk in’s. Very frustrating

Give me an appointment any day—ain't no one got time to wait anymore.

I do miss the world where barbers had glass Coke bottles in those old coolers and a free morning to "shoot the ****" as Dad used to say.

Don’t agree. Waiting your turn for a few minutes is good for the sole. Wholesome conversation with others doing the same is worthwhile.

That's why I added the second part, because I'm split—there IS something about having the time to sit and chat, but I much prefer to be on the lake or in the woods than in a barber shop making small talk.

54 Main Street, Plymouth ... 'The Granite State' ... New Hampshire: www.facebook.com/plymouthmainst/ ...... Downtown Corner Cuts ...... walk-ins preferred ..... appointments highly discouraged ..... ten dollar haircut for seniors, age-60 ..... fifteen dollar haircut for sub-seniors, under age-60 ...... two barbers with ONE there at any one time: Nancy or Karen

"Fast cut, clean place, and the price can't be beat."

"Tipping is highly discouraged" ...... well, not 'zactly .... just threw this quote in for giggles ..... ha-ha-ha!

Yes. I have been going to Toby’s for a little over two years. Nice guy and good haircuts. Only Toby though and as of a few weeks ago, no appointments. Wait in your car until you are next. If I go there and there are 2 or more cars with people in them I go another time.

Default Laconia

5 barber shops are available. Call ahead as they can be booked. If not they will take walk-ins. All have their unique flare. Just have to try them until one suits you! I narrowed it down to Barbary on Main St. and Jack the Clipper on Court St. Just call and see who is available.

By the way, y'all who jump must not have particular styles or are flexible? I've only had two barbers in the last 20 years and, just recently, had to find a new one as one of them got into a motorcycle accident and the other retired. Finding a new barber who can do a high-and-tight-flattop (the cut I've gotten for ~30 years) with straight razor shave has been challenging. I found a new guy, but I've only been once and the verdict is still out!

Thanks to the OP for posting residence (Gilford) in hos profile. If others did that, it would be easier to give good recommendations. I use "Supercuts". Shops all over the state. They do walk-ins, but I always call ahead 30-60 minutes, 1. to see if my preferred staffer is on duty, and 2. so no waiting.

There is a Barber Shop on Route 28 on the Pittsfield/Chichester town line. Not too far from Bosco Bell.

It is called Danis Barber Shop. They charge $14 and are open at 7:00 am Monday thru Saturday.

I believe all they do are walk ins. They live on site (house in rear) and all the family members come in to assist whenever they get busy so there is rarely ever waiting.

Best thing about them? Price and convenience!

It seems they do appointments. I do think most are walk ins. I have no particular need for other than a "regular" haircut. They offer to trim those pesky eyebrow hairs. They use shaving cream and a straight razor for trimming the area around the ears and nape of the neck. And they finish off by vacuuming around the shoulders and neck area, not just a small brush.

Default Gary's in Wolfeboro

$10 for basic cut. Actually, I think basic is the only cut on the menu. Gary and his wife Lucy are the only two. I like Lucy and I'm usually in and out in 15 minutes. Some interesting decorations in the shop as well.

Closed Sun, Mon and Thurs.

Default self cut

My barber of many years retired during Covid while I was in California. No comment on the barbers I saw there. He started appointments many years ago at my request because I never had time to wait. Appt on Tu and Th. Once he said well the guy in California just has to follow what I did. SURE. No surprise he retired as he is a couple months older than me. Therefore, since then I do my own hair. So no barber cut since November 2008 somewhere. Doing the back is tricky but doable.

Default A True Barbershop...

A true "barbershop" in my opinion must have the following 10 guidelines to get my business...

#1. It must have that red white and blue spiral sign outside. The bigger the better!

#2. If the word "salon or stylist" appears anywhere in the name, run as fast as you can!

#3. Copious amounts of hair must be all over the floor!

#4. A old poster on the wall showing all sorts of haircuts you would never get from from the 50's & 60's.

#5. Grossly outdated Life, National Geographic & Time magazines are spread throughout the waiting area.

#6. The barber, must be versed in clipper, buzzers and straight razor hair removal.

#7. If they don't offer to buzz the hair from your ears and nose or trim your Einstein eyebrows, they are not a true barber!

#8. The shop must have that large jar of blue liquid (Barbicide??) with all kinds of combs floating in it. Though I have never seen one taken out!

#9. A small grainy black & white television with manual dial controls only (NEVER remote controlled!!) showing reruns of the Beverly Hillbillies preferably Jethro's "Double Naught Spy epsiode!!

#10. A vintage coke machine with lever handle and pullout glass bottles of Coke, Moxie and A&W Root Beer for .10 cents in the corner!!

Did I miss anything??

Dan

Default Straw sweep broom

Straw sweep broom for when it's quiet enough to sweep the hair on the floor into a corner.

You might want to consider checking out a local asset, the Empire Beauty School on Main St. in downtown Laconia.

Help new students learn a marketable skill and save a few bucks while you're at it.

Note: you results may vary.

I was waiting to see how long you guys could keep up this thread about HAIR before someone mentioned how easy it is to cut your own hair. Last time I paid for a haircut was 35 years ago. My scissors are from the dollar store. Takes 15 minutes.

I’ve been cutting my own hair for over 2 years. I use only scissors, rare electric dog shaver and occasional thinning shears. Takes less than 5 minutes. My dog doesn’t mind sharing. My wife thinks it looks pretty good.

No photos will be used as proof nor videos of my doing it. It’s not a pretty sight.

Default Ruel's

I recently started going to Ruel's Barber Shop in Meredith, and have been pretty happy with the results. Old-school barber shop, two barbers, no appointments, so there can be a bit of a wait but not terrible.

A side question -- I used to go to Andrew, a young guy who took over the former Jeri's barber shop in Alton. He was doing a great job, made it through the pandemic okay, and I had a good conversation with him one day about how well things were going. I went back for my next haircut a few weeks later and found the shop closed and he was gone without a trace. Does anyone know what happened? He seemed to have a great future at that spot.

There were several things that ended up causing Andrew to close up shop, including the restrictions placed on barbering through COVID. In the end, Andrew closed the shop and moved out of town.

Thank you, Dave. He seemed to be a perfect fit as a small town barber, and I was sorry to see him go. I wish him well and hope that he has landed on his feet.

I agree but lately, they have been very busy. I discovered another barber that is also very good and accepting walk-ins. He is located in Refresh Salon on Union Ave. in Laconia.

Dan
Yes, you missed the list of such shops,,,

I'm 100% in you camp, but I NEED that list!

Now I'm just salivating thinking of that A & W (and I would settle for an RC Cola) and just chomping at the bit to see good ole Double Naught with his iron hat! Sure wish life was anywhere near as good as that today,,, Oh and a box of donuts from the old shop in Alton Bay next to the mini golf!

I'll be watching for the list ;-)
