Def not a religious thread, but I just wanted to say to everyone on the forum to thank the God of your understanding daily for your loved ones.....dont take them or the time you have with them for granted. My wife was in a car accident here in Jersey on Tuesday where our Volvo flipped over 5 times, and she walked away. Another woman involved in the accident flipped over too, and she walked away as well. That phone call I recieved at work that morning could have gone a whole different way, and so could the conversation I had with my kids that evening....

Just a reminder, dont go to bed mad....dont leave the house without an I love you and a kiss. Dont take anything for granted.....life is, and def can be....too short. A second can change your life forever.

Great advice. Also, I believe Volvos have one of the best safety records in the world. Something to consider when buying a new car.

.....not to be too nosy...but what caused the flip-over? .... a front tire blow-out....an over correction in steering....combined with too much speed or something? ..... falling asleep at the wheel? .... great to hear that all is non-injured but what happened to cause the flip-over?

I've been to many many roll overs and it's almost always the same. The occupants are either critically injured or they are sitting on the guard rail with only scratches. Usually, the deciding factor of life or near death is seat belts. Partial ejection, because of no seat belt during the roll over, are the main cause of fatalities. In my experience, those occupants don't fare well.

Truly glad your wife fared so well. What a scary experience for you and for her. It's remarkable that both she and the other driver walked away. Hopefully, when the dust settles, you can replace one Volvo for another. Sounds like a life saver. And, as you said, never go to bed angry.

Also glad to hear she was OK after an accident like that. I concur that being angry gets you nothing but being angry. Holding a grudge or holding anger is just plain non-productive in any situation. So yes hold your loved ones close and never take anything or anyone for granted.

I don't think FLL was looking for any fault At All. I think he was just asking what caused the accident. In Life..(I have 72 years) If you don't ask questions..You will Not LEARN anything. fatlazyless and I have talked alot on here.....brother fat, the other driver lost control of her suv and veered across 2 lanes and just clipped my wife in the rear quarter, the road was a little damp from overnight.....my wife was somewhere in the vicinity of 70-75 mph and it spun her enough that the rear wheel on the pass side sheered off, axle and all, and it rolled. She somehow landed on another guys trunk during the rolls....(???) and there was a 4th car involved as well, that we think was into something with the woman in the suv, before my wife was struck. Details are tough, my wife was so confused and kind of still is. She had no idea how many times she rolled, that was from wittnesses to the accident.

Needless to say, we are shopping 2014 Volvos right now. We are believers. Seat belts do save lives, airbags as well. Please buckle up everyone!! Thank you to everyone for your well wishes and support. We love NH!!

We have had several Volvos prove their worth. We love our Volvos...have been driving them almost continuously since 1985.

There was a brief stretch of time in that period that we didn't have a Volvo. My husband had a truck for business, and I wanted a car that would hold six people, so we had a 1991 Lincoln town car. My 18-year-old son fell asleep at the wheel doing 70 on the highway. He hit the guard raii in the front, woke up, overcorrected and spun around, hitting the guard rail again, but with the tail end of the car. Yes, he was wearing his seatbelt.

The car performed exactly as it was engineered to do. The passenger compartment was intact, and Danny was unharmed. The rest of the car...notsomuch. The back end (that massive Lincoln trunk) was crumpled to about 12 inches from rear window to rear bumper.

We do love our Volvos, but like Paugus Bay FF said, "Wear your seatbelt!"

True that Volvo's have a great safety record but nothing works without your seat belts. We were returning from Fla last April on rt 75 near Sarasota when we came upon an accident scene. A new Navigator had apparently rolled over violently right in the middle of the highway because clothes and luggage was scattered for several hundred feet in all 3 lanes. Next to the vehicle was the driver who appeared to be a man in his 40's, laying dead in the road after being thrown from the vehicle. There were no other vehicles involved so there was no way to know what caused the accident.
Glad your wife had no serious injuries and was smart enough to belt up.

Wife had a XC70, LOVED it. It had a very nice, solid feel to it when the doors closed. All kinds of safety features were included too. We too had to buy something that could tow but we wish we still had it.

A couple of years ago in Manchester I saw a Volvo sedan getting pulled out of the median strip. It was upside-down and a tow truck righted it as I was creeping past. It didn't even have a cracked windshield.

YUP ! I use a clothesline, and I do not have a navigation system either. I happen to love paper maps. Also, I ALWAYS use my seat belt......they saved my life one time. Thank heavens that everyone survived that truly terrifying accident ! Good luck with the car shopping.

As a nurse, I could never understand people's refusal to wear seatbelts. It's one thing to "Live free or die" but it's quite another to refuse to use common sense.
So many fatalities are linked to unrestrained drivers.
Which leads to another favorite rant of mine...the lack of a helmet law in NH.

I agree. If you're looking for safety features, Nav is one of them. Reading a paper map vs having the car keep track of your location and telling you ahead of time when you will need to turn, what lane to get into, and then at the turn is a big safety feature. Trying to read a paper map while driving was never a good idea. Right up there with texting.

Of course there are those that will say they already know how to get everywhere they will ever need to go.....Ok, so you don't need it.

This is because it is a federal law that is in effect in all 50-states including NH.

So, in the State of NH, while it is illegal to be driving a Mack Truck, built by Volvo of Sweden, without a seat belt, it is perfectly legal to be driving a Volvo automobile built by Gelley of China, without a seat belt.

The US Dept of Transportation and the NHSTA both provide grants and funding-for various Highway safety Projects and under the SAFETEA guidelines Primary seat-belt laws are required for the State to be eligible to for applying for the grants. The information can be found in the Federal register when the various grants a re published for application. It may be a reason for rejection of a grant application. Dont know if that is exactly what you guys are talking about but as someone who wrote grant applications for my agency albeit in Massachusetts I do know that Seatbelt Laws are a requirement for some funding sources. Just think about little New Hampshire which has a compliance seat belt usage rate of just 72.2% according to the link .....and that's the lowest rate of use in the country ......http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/sea..._United_States ... 72.2% ..... that's not exactly something that does anyone any good in terms of public driving safety....it means more visits to the hospital emergency room ..... the hospital ..... and the morgue ....... plus the ambulance service .... by more drivers and passengers.....right here in N.H. ....a usage rate of 72.2% .....lowest usage rate in all 50-states ....right here in N.H.

It is rather interesting to notice that neighboring Massachusetts has the second lowest usage rate of 73.7% seat belt use, and Massachusetts has a mandatory seat belt law for adults above 18-years unlike New Hampshire. Have to wonder why Massachusetts is so low ..... after all ..... 73.7% is pretty danged close to 72.2%.

Hawaii, 97.6%, and California, 96.2%, have the highest rates of compliance.

Has anyone ever had the opportunity to hide themself inside a refrigerated cadaver drawer down in the morgue, and then surprise an unknowing medical examiner by sliding the large drawer open while entombed within ..... jumping out ......and shouting ..... helloooooooooo......surprisssssse ........I am alive! ... ...thankyou Mademoiselle El Seatbeltaux! ... ... no....probably not....it just don't go that way?

Im just not big on navigation. My wife and I both have Tom Toms in our vehicles, and our cell phones both have great apps for navigation......both of which,we hardly ever use. The premium sound system in the XC90 is unbelivable, the same that we had in the S40 that was just totalled. Subwoofer, center channel, full surround sound, not super loud, but distortion free at high volume. Crystal clear. We wanted that same sound system, with the navigation, it is a different unit, one we were not impressed with. We went to a drive in movie here in Jersey one night, and we were suprised to find out that they broadcast the sound on a FM station....(instead of the hanging thingees for your window)....(am I old, or what?) anyhoo, that movie, in surround sound, cranked up in a drive in, was awesome!! So, we left out the nav, but we got the rear seat entertainment system....with full surround!! The kids love it, and it came with wireless headphones too.....so we love it with Nemo (1000 watches) and cinderella (1000 watches) ect....ect....ect.

Thank all of you that have wished us well over the last couple of weeks. We really appreciate it. We were blessed, that my wife, Robin came out of it ok, we were also blessed to be kid free at accident time!! We were blessed to be driving that Volvo, and even more blessed to be able to buy another one! I hate to be or act religious, we go to church, but we are far from bible thumpers.....but, when God steps in, and changes the way or outcome of a situation, well lets just say, give thanks where thanks are due......if you dont believe in all that, thats cool too!! No harm, no foul. My biggest point in all this, is.....dont take anything for granted. It might not be here tomorrow. Thats it.

Glenn, so glad to hear that the outcome was good for your wife! My brother was in a near fatal car accident 12 years ago... Getting that phone call is one of the worst experiences anyone can ever go through. Blessings on you and your family! I hope she's enjoying her new car and driving in style!

Not a big fan of factory navigation.......a $125 Garmin does a better job.

I am glad it turned out ok for your family. You are so right that you can never take for granted that there will be a tomorrow. I am here in Jersey also, our roads are killers. I turned more grey each time one of my children started driving. We are moving up to NH soon, as my husband says where they drive courteously lol.
