The Value of Lake Winnipesaukee

[Lake Winnipesaukee Assoc]

At the Lake Winnipesaukee Association’s request, the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences at Dartmouth College completed a policy brief on the net economic value that the lake brings to New Hampshire. The study focused on three sectors; real estate values, business revenues, and water supply.

The Lake Winnipesaukee Association will present a summary of the report and discuss the work of the Association to protect this valuable asset. The meeting will be held virtually via Zoom on November 18th beginning at 7pm.

I'm curious how the recent rash of cyanobacteria blooms are impacting the real-estate and rental markets. It has to be hard to calculate, during a period of inflated demand, but an impact is likely to be hiding in the numbers. Many of us in the lakes region have been kept out of the water for days or weeks over the summer due to cyanobacteria near our beaches, and that makes the lake have a lower, yet still high, value.

A good discussion of cyanobacteria is also needed. Is is always a health risk or only in some cases? Are people over-reacting? Has there been an increase in ALS cases in the lakes region? Are vets seeing an increase in pet poisoning due to drinking the water?

If cyanobacteria is having an impact, what can be done to reduce the blooms? Are the standard best practices around runoff, septic and fertilizer enough to stop it, or are the new blooms a byproduct of earlier and longer summer weather that has no local cure?

With regards to primary research about Lake Winnipesaukee and its watershed, LWA is the most knowledgeable organization I'm aware of. I look forward to this Zoom lecture and will be renewing my membership with LWA for 2022.

Here is the reader’s digest version. The lake is worth $17B.
The LWA is investigating $224K annually to protect against the ongoing degradation of the lake.

Or simply an investment of 0.001% of the value annually.

I hope there are other organizations trying to do the right thing like this organization is.

This is hardly an insurance policy against the crown jewel.

I will donate now and volunteer once I get to retirement.

Good points. They also said they have grown a lot over the past few years--going from 1/2 a person to four people, and--as you suggest--they really should grow much more in order to tackle all the projects they discussed.

I donate a lot here every year. It's a good cause and it protects the value of our homes
