Long Distance Mover recommendations

Looking for recommendations for long distance home movers.
From Lakes region to Southern states.

We've used United Humboldt twice; once from CT to MA, and then 4 yrs later from MA to NH. They are based in the Boston area, but they move nationally and internationally and do corporate relos. We had a lot of stuff and a number of delicate items, (grandfather clock, big china cabinet, home gym equipment), and it all survived both moves just fine. Their people were also friendly, professional, and had no issue with them being in our home.

Be very, very careful….this industry is notorious for quoting a price, picking up your stuff, and literally either holding your stuff hostage for a higher price, or flat out “misplacing “ it for months, hoping you will just give up. Read the horror stories.

We used Mayflower when sending from Ma to CA. The local team were great. There was a glass top table that was crated up in spectacular fashion. They called about everything happening and called a couple days before delivering in CA.

I believe there is another thread in the Forum directed to this question. We used Paul Arpin Van Lines when we moved to NH in 2008. They were excellent, especially after several somewhat bad experiences. Good luck!

Just circling back with more info....

I called Dragonfly Moving & Storage for a 'guesstimate' without coming to the house.

The background is this company bought out R.J. Crowley which was family owner business since 1963.

The new owner gave me a lot of info about his industry.
These companies in general charge by the weight, they also charge a fuel charge based on mileage. Right now the fuel charge is EXTREMELY high because the trucks runs on diesel.

They gave me a ball-park 'guesstimate' based on recent similar moves they've done.
Glad I was sitting down, when he gave me a rough estimate
Guess I'll just build that into the sales price of house, when the time comes.....

...A big move is expensive. We've moved 3 times to different states and each time the moving bill was over $20K. And you're right; it is based on weight, distance, and if they have to store your stuff for any period of time. Fortunately, they were corporate relos, so all we had to pay for was the donuts, coffee, pizza, and sodas for the mover guys.

Have you thought about PODS…? When we moved from Massachusetts to Washington, we filled one POD and had it shipped to Portland, OR and I rented a truck and filled that and drove cross country. Saved a lot of money.

William C. Huff Moving and Storage out of Barrington is very reputable. I know the family, and they are the only ones we use. They have a facility here and in Naples, FL.

Huff has moved me twice with absolutely no problems, and what I thought was a very fair price.

Sometimes it’s cheaper to yard sale and give away. Then it is auto move it. One of the first things I told the children when the moved out was to not by furniture. Find it at yard sales and second hand stores. That way, I would not have to move it!

Great, advice! Especially to the sunbelt states. There are tons of consignment stores with great prices on excellent furniture!

An eccentric aunt sold all her furniture on consignment in VA. Moved to FL and bought her furniture on consignment. She actually made money and better furniture!

Driving cross country is a real educational experience….you really see the two americas…once you get away from the east coast population area, you see a very conservative country. A very agricultural based economy still in the middle of the country. I stopped at a hotel one night in South Dakota and there was literally horse and cow **** all over the floor of the lobby…cowboys checking in for the big county dairy expo…cowboy boots covered in manure.

One REALLY has to READ the contract.

True story.
Began in New Hampshire.
Friend had household furniture placed in a storage unit. Just like the ones you see everywhere.
Then he needed to move all to newly built house in Florida.
He asked for my advice - which I gave - but he ignored.

He measured the items in storage.
Went online and found a moving company that would take his furniture from NH to Florida.
Price: $2,750.
He asked me to travel to storage unit the day that all was to be picked up.
10:00 AM moving company would show up.
They showed up at noon. Drove all the way from Brooklyn NY. Box truck.
As they were loading the movers stated that there was more stuff then was agreed to. The price went UP. $3,250.00. As they continued to load the price went UP again. $3,750.00.
Each time price went up. A phone call took place between friend and moving company.
Prices were agreed to and off went the truck back to Brooklyn, NY. To be transferred to a long haul mover.

Now on to Florida.
Date was provided for delivery.
No show.
Another date was provided for delivery.
No show.
Then unexpectedly this large tractor trailer shows up.
The driver of tractor trailer stated that all would not be unloaded unless cash of $2,500 was provided. No checks. No credit cards.

If not paid. All would go back to warehouse and he would be charged storage fees. And local delivery fee.

Off to the bank he goes and gives driver $2,500 cash.

Some items were damaged. No insurance. No claim filed.

My original suggestion was Ray the Mover in Manchester.
This is the company that I used to move my furniture across country.
I had zero problems and no damage. And no EXTRA CHARGES.

Go figure !
