The NH Boat Show...
...is where I'll be ordering my 2020 Sea-Doo GTX 170! Hahahaha!!! Bazinga!
But seriously, who's going and is there a better day than another to connect with DaSilva's? I was thinking Saturday, but I'd like to have time to ask questions and play with the machines without feeling rushed. I've only ever been to the show once before some years back and can't remember how busy it was. Sent from my SM-G950U using Winnipesaukee Forum mobile app |

Until it's cancelled, I'll consider going. Especially with, what, 5 cases across the state? We'll see what happens in the next week, but I'm not ready to shut down NH.

Two math ideas that I've tried to keep in mind on coronavirus:
1) Risk vs reward--Visiting the grocery store during off hours is definitely worth the risk. But using the Boston subway at rush hour is not. 2) Exponential growth--viruses expand fast--they double each period. So if we have X number of cases today, we don't go to 1.1X, then 1.2X. then 1.3X.... We go to 2X, then 4X, then 8X, then 16X..,. Pretty soon we're at 100,000+. I think I'd visit Mr DaSilva in his shop or call on the phone |

My view on the Coronavirus
I am a co-manager of a law firm in Boston. We have about 65 employees. We have been pressed to have a detailed plan to deal with the coronavirus. Employees are also asking to work from home. I sent my co-managers an email this morning titled "Context and Perspective." Here's what I said --
"From Wikipedia - 'In June 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the new strain of swine-origin H1N1 as a pandemic. This novel virus spread worldwide and had caused 18,500 laboratory-confirmed deaths with an estimated 151,700 to 575,400 deaths total by August of 2010.' "I could be a wiseass and say, “let’s roll out our plan that we used to address the H1N1 virus back in 2009.” Millions effected, and hundreds of thousands dead. To the best of my knowledge, we did NOTHING. I am not saying that we should not be reasonably prepared, especially when there are things out of our control. But the Coronavirus is a media driven event meant to cause panic. Let’s have some perspective on this and not overreact. I think we should stay the course and take our cues from the CDC and Massachusetts health officials." This is a media driven crisis. Personally, I would not miss an event because of this so-called crisis, especially if you are under 70 years old. To answer your question, the NH Boat Show isn't too busy that you cannot find time to speak with someone. You should be all set. |

Yes, NH is open for business. I personally am increasing my use of an internal cleansing agent. Imported from Scotland, I buy it through a NH state agency in small quantities. LFOD. LOL

I do not believe it is media hype. The coronavirus is extremely contagious and has a very high mortality rate in older people. We have to start thinking about others and not only ourselves. Just because we may be young and healthy, we all have parents and grandparents. You would not want to come in contact with someone and then spread it to one of your family members who would not be as strong to fight it off.
I have read the importance of social distancing. It only works when there are less than 1% of the population who are sick. We shouldn’t wait until more people become infected before we do anything. I hope that we start canceling many of these events so that it is not up to an individual to decide the fate of all of us. |

The NH Boat Show...
If 150,000 people died of H1N1 then 5,000,000 people were infected given the 0.03% death rate. Potentially these numbers could be tripled. The high death rate associated with the coronavirus is skewed because of older people.
I don’t remember the same hysteria with any other pandemic. Last year 80,000 people in the U.S. died of the flu. It was an especially bad year. I don’t remember any news coverage about this. That’s because we understand the risk. I’m not saying that individuals should not be vigilant in preventing the spread of coronavirus. They should. What I’m saying is that it is a complete overreaction driven by the media and social media. I guess part of it is the unknown risk. However, coronaviruses have been around forever. This strain is different. Other types of risks we assume every day. For example, far more people (35,000) will die this year because of car accidents. We do not cancel events because people have to drive to them. That’s because we understand the risk. If you’re relatively young and in good health there is very little to worry about. The number of reported cases are starting to rise and I expect that the exponential growth to start manifesting itself in the next week or so. People need to remember COVID-19 has 10x the fatality rate of the normal flu and more contagious. If the published annual flu mortality Is correct it translates to 160,000 to 690,000 deaths from COVID-19. Why put yourself in the position of becoming a statistic?

Susie, your math is wrong. 0.03% is 0.0003. So 5,000,000 at a 0.03% death rate is 1,500 deaths. Based on the estimated mortality rate of COVID-19, using the CDC guess that once all cases are reported it will be 1% worldwide, there would be 50,000 deaths for 5,000,000 cases. Yes, far fewer than the flu in total but scarier because, as someone said previously, it is unknown and there is no vaccine.
I’m close to 70 and I’ve never been scared of the flue. I wasn’t bothered by the bird flu, MERS, SARS, H1N1, and the super flu scares. This scares the crap out of me Sent from my iPhone using Winnipesaukee Forum mobile app |

Yes,The Real BigGuy, I’m the one that said there was no vaccine. I was trying to quote Major and give a rebuttal to him. But it sounded like I was agreeing with him instead of disagreeing with him.
The coronavirus is something to be taken very seriously and I don’t believe enough people are doing that yet. |

I don’t believe wishful thinking ever cured or prevented a viral infection.
I don’t really know much about boats or fishing or local government; but training as a scientist and physician, I am saddened by the misinformation and denial of some on this thread. There is much that we do not know about this virus and only fools have certainty; but there is enough known that any responsible individual should have serious concerns about it. Of course, there are legitimate differences of opinion about it and each individual may choose how to deal with it. But facts do matter.

Not a personal attack on you Susie but, your post points out the one of the reasons “fake news” is an issue. Individuals hear something or read something and can now quickly post it, tweet it, text it, etc. without hearing opposing or alternate views or doing their own verification of facts. Texting, tweeting, facebooking, posting, etc. make it far too easy to propagate misleading or false info. Far to easy to blame the media for “fake news” then to look at how we handle information. Shows how & how easy it was/is for Russia to interfere in our elections.

My guess is that you did not feel the same way about H1N1. Why? Because of media and social media. I am a responsible person and only my wife thinks I'm a fool since she knows me best! I refuse to give into scare tactics. You have your right to believe what you believe, and I have my right to believe what I believe. Just because we differ, that doesn't mean I'm irresponsible or a fool. |

The H1N1 death rate, as reported by CDC, was 0.02% (0.2 deaths per 1000 cases)which is less than the common flue. The COVID-19 rate in the US, reported yesterday is about 2.8% (28 deaths per 1000) but, you are correct in expecting it will decrease as more testing is done and cases reported. CDC expects it will go to 1%. Even if it drops to half that (0.5%) it will be 25 times more deadly than H1N1.
I understand your point MAJOR. I’m just not as big a gambler as you are but, I’m in the age group that appears to be the most effected. You may not be and have better odds than me. In either case, be safe. Sent from my iPhone using Winnipesaukee Forum mobile app |

All I have said from the beginning is that we need to take this much more seriously than we are. Somehow, when I was trying to quote Major, all the quotes became mine and now I’m being accused of something that I didn’t say and I certainly don’t mean. Again read my first posts. I have said that we need to start practicing social distancing as the only way to prevent this from spreading more quickly. I feel terrible that people believe that I feel the opposite of what I do. |

I honestly do not know why you would infer this from what I wrote. I agree we do not have all the information. You have every right not to give into “scare tactics.” I understand your point about H1N1...I hope the outcome is the same but, at this point I am not optimistic. Your suggestion of an overreaction to Covid-19 may turn out to correct. I hope it is.

It appears that the NH Boat show will have a reduced crowd this year!
Two comments: I think we're seeing the result of a different philosophy at play here, one that has an analog in snow storms. At one point, nothing shut down for snow as it was just "normal" life, but now everything—schools, libraries, government buildings, restaurants, etc.—shuts down in order to avoid as much damage as possible. Also, in this litigious/critical/condemning world, it's difficult/impossible to not be aggressive when thinking about possible consequences, especially when others begin a movement. In the case of colleges in MA, with some closing and moving to online semester finishes, it will become increasingly hard for others to not do the same. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to learn that John Kerry, and/or some of his corrupt, liberal, trader, scumbag friends, have all been working with the Chi-Comms to create the chaos that is the corona virus. Nobody wants Trump out of office more than the Chi- Comms, and the Demoncrat's. That's what liberals do. They "collude" with America's enemies to their advantage. Ted Kennedy "colluded" with the Russians back in the 80's to try and thwart Ronald Reagan's re-election to no avail... John Kerry has been dealing with the mullah's in Iran behind Trump's back trying to get Trump to go to war with Iran, hoping that it would destroy Trump's presidency. They don't care about anything other than POWER, (and destroying Trump), and they will do anything to get it, even if it's at the expense of this country. They hate this country. Like Rham Emanuel always says, "never let a good crisis go to waste", how pathetic. This corona virus scare tactic, is just another pathetic attempt to destroy Trump, and/or his chances of re-election, because liberals know that they can't win an election by simply debating the issues. They would lose every time, so they have to resort to their corrupt ways, knowing they have the media in their back pocket to protect, and cover for them whenever needed... The "double standard". It's more obvious now than ever before, and for that reason, no matter what they throw at Trump from here on out, it will never succeed. The people are on to their pathetic little games. My hunch is that he will be re-elected in a land slide, and hopefully start putting these corrupt bastards in jail where they belong. Sorry if I went a little off topic...

I remember a month / 2 weeks ago when we were all focused on impeachment. Can't help but think this could all be crap to detsroy the economy after reading things today. I'm begining to think that if they can't destroy him one way they will try something new. Nothing will make them feel better unless they can improve the nanny state and make more pepole dependent instead of resourceful. |

Gillygirl is a typical example of how TDS (Trump derangement syndrome), is far more of a threat to this great country than the corona virus ever will be... That's why they need to be defeated (at the polls) badly. They need the spanking they won't allow us to give our kids anymore...!!! lol

To be fair...
90% of PWC activity IS the pursuit, acquisition, preparation, transportation, maintenance and storage of the machine. 10% is the zipping around the lake. Can we get a countdown clock for the first splash? |

It takes about 10 seconds to come up with the list Top Water posted. Just go to the relevant member, click posts started by that member and there it is. No digging necessary.

One of the most important things to come from this is exposing our reliance on China. We should not be relying on the enemy for our most important goods and services. Bring back manufacturing to the U.S. I'd love to blame the Democrats for this, but it was a joint effort between Democrats and Republicans. |

In thinking about it, it's at a low level now. The media and social media are driving the panic we are now seeing. Under 100 deaths in the U.S. Our government's response is more to appease the media than anything else.

The great pumpkin finally admitted that we have a pandemic. That was a word he didn't want to hear a week ago. It took a stock market crash for him to act. If the market didn't crash he would still be in denial. But I'm glad he finally acted like a leader instead of a spoiled child regardless of what forced him into it.

The CDC “guess” indeed. Take at look at Italy. 15k reported. 1k dead already. 1k recovered. 13k ongoing. Depending on how you want to look at those statistics the mortality rate is anywhere from 7.333 to 50%. This is not an insignificant sample. We don’t know enough yet to make an intelligent guess. If you are young and/or healthy and don’t know anyone that isn’t, Then maybe you are ok. You still need to worry about any of your healthy friends that do know someone who isn’t. Follow the advice from CDC and other sources you trust. Best way to get rid of this thing is to take it seriously. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Considering the stock market decline, lost wages and the diminished income of the self employed, I'd bet boat dealers have a pessimistic outlook for sales this year.
Throw in a boat show cancellation or three and we now have a buyer's market. Drive a hard bargain and hope the dealer has missed your "eager buyer" threads here. |

My hope is that the much maligned millennials are able to step up and restore civility both in politics and everyday life. As long as the "adults" of today are unable or unwilling to see, let alone accept, any role they might have played or are continuing to play in the current toxic state in our great country, there will never be change. Instead, periodically there will be a shift in which party is in power, continued toxic rhetoric, and no meaningful, sustainable actions which will help us grow stronger not just today but for years to come. Maybe the millennials can't do it. Thus far, those of us in older generations have made things worse. And yes I know, it's not me, it's the other side. (That was meant to be both sarcastic and cynical) |

Obama was lazy. Other than destroying healthcare what did he do? Give hundreds of millions of dollars to Iran for some meaningless treaty? Join the Paris climate accord so we could systematically destroy our energy advantage? He did NOTHING. A list of Trump's accomplishments: •Almost 4 million jobs created since election. •More Americans are now employed than ever recorded before in our history. •Created more than 400,000 manufacturing jobs. •Manufacturing jobs growing at the fastest rate in more than THREE DECADES. •Economic growth last quarter hit 4.2 percent. •New unemployment claims recently hit a 49-year low. •Median household income has hit highest level ever recorded. •African-American unemployment has recently achieved the lowest rate ever recorded. •Hispanic-American unemployment is at the lowest rate ever recorded. •Asian-American unemployment recently achieved the lowest rate ever recorded. •Women’s unemployment recently reached the lowest rate in 65 years. •Youth unemployment has recently hit the lowest rate in nearly half a century. •Lowest unemployment rate ever recorded for Americans without a high school diploma. •Veterans’ unemployment recently reached its lowest rate in nearly 20 years. •Almost 3.9 million Americans have been lifted off food stamps since the election. •The Pledge to America’s Workers has resulted in employers committing to train more than 4 million Americans. •95 percent of U.S. manufacturers are optimistic about the future—the highest ever. •Retail sales surged last month, up another 6 percent over last year. •Signed the biggest package of tax cuts and reforms in history. After tax cuts, over $300 billion poured back in to the U.S. in the first quarter alone. •As a result of the tax bill, small businesses will have the lowest top marginal tax rate in more than 80 years. •Opened ANWR and approved Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipelines. •Record number of regulations eliminated. •Enacted regulatory relief for community banks and credit unions. •Obamacare individual mandate penalty GONE. This is just a partial list. Two conservative supreme court justices are at the top of my list. You can say what you want about Trump, but he's a workaholic and a doer. By the way, I thought Bush was lazy too. |

That said, I view these discussions like talking to my mother-in-law. My wife and I have an agreement with my mother-in-law not to talk politics because she always ends up crying. However, during even benign conversations she can't help pepper into the conversation digs and slights against Trump and republicans. With her, I try desperately not to respond. However, with the Forum, I feel differently. If I see a dig at our president or conservative values, I feel like I have to respond. I honestly try not to initiate. Most of my comments are in response to someone else's dig. However, I have probably initiated a few. That said, arguing for some of us is fun and engaging. I grew up in a family that did not hold back. We discussed things. If the members of the Forum do not like the political discussion, let me know and I'd be happy to comply. |
