Default Summer Fly Fishing?

I’m coming back to New Hampshire the third week of May and will be there until the end of August. I’m hoping to practice some fly casting on Winni and wondering how feasible salmon fishing is during the summer without trolling. Ive got enough experience with a downrigger to know roughly where to find baitfish on the thermocline later in the summer, but those depths don’t seem very friendly towards fly fishing.

Early mornings I see fish nip the surface but I’ve never found out if they are salmon, nor if salmon rise that far in the warmer months. With sinking line I expect I could reach the necessary depths but I don’t know if I’d be wasting my time not covering the same amount of area that the trollers do.

Any advice would be appreciated as I’m still new to fly fishing and finding salmon on Winnipesaukee. I understand that this will be an uphill battle but I think it’ll be way more worth it than just sitting and staring at my downrigger!

Many thanks
