Question How is "Getting Here" Affected by a Pandemic?

For those of us who drive from distant points of the U.S.A. to arrive at the lake?

At this point I don't think there is much difference.

Yes, traffic is lighter and you should take the precautions that many are now taking when in public places. Try to minimize contact with people and objects that have the possibility of being infected. But those things are true whether you are in your home area on the road.

I went boating yesterday in Naples Florida and it seemed like a normal day. The usual amount of boats and people, and even tour boats were out on the water. Before I went I called a boat rental place with about 25 boats in their fleet just to find out what was going on. They told me it was business as usual and they were sold out for the day. I got the last parking space at the Naples public boat launch.

I think the response to the virus varies depending upon the area of the country you are in so if you are travelling a long way you will see different levels of response along your route.

In my NH neighborhood I have been seeing more families with kids.

We have very few year round kids here so I conclude that these are vacation home people whose kids are out of school and the parents are on work from home.

It is nice to see some additional activity but I hope they didn't bring any hitch hiking CV bugs!

My southern NH neighborhood was a highway yesterday—I had no idea we had so many families with kids in the area!

We typically fly from LA, but are now being told not to fly, so driving might be a better option. With all the gas, motel, and food stops in the course of a drive that would take more than a week, however, I suspect the potential exposure while driving is no better, and perhaps worse, than flying. In the meantime, I am stuck in LA and my spouse is in NH as we try to decide on the best course of action, probably waiting this out until it resolves. Ugh!

Sounds like a romantic camping adventure—throw a tent and bag in your ride and go! What a story!

We arrived back from FL last night. Drive was "normal", other than the fact that we made record time due to no traffic, being able to cruise at high speeds all the way (even through NYC!), and no restaurant stops.

Sadly, it is this type of "hope" that will make it spread.

Containing this virus is not predicated on hope- it requires perseverance/diligence!

Default May be difficult...

The airlines are not sure of schedules and I just spoke to Concord Coach Lines...As far as I know, the only bus service from Boston's Logan to the Lakes Region.

Concord Coach Lines asked me when I would be travelling and strongly suggested I check just before my scheduled flight because they "were not sure they would be in business then".

Shall we close the southern border then?

Question Getting Back? Not While Florida DOT Stops You...

A neighbor informs me Interstate traffic is backed-up five hours, encountering Florida checkpoint.

Sure enough:

Everything our governor is doing in Florida is too little, too late. Yes, they are stopping cars on the Georgia/Florida line, specifically looking for cars from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut,. They are also stopping cars on the Louisiana/Florida border.

We have already had people returning from cruises who were infected and have since died. They have flown into our airports and came in contact with hundreds of other people.
Our stay in place order is only starting today! We have waited way too long to do anything.
Headlines in today’s paper have estimated in two weeks we will go from about 100 dead to almost 7000 dead in Florida. We have a very large senior population here, of which I am one. I add that, because I’m beginning to wonder if dementia is affecting what people are doing here.
I am more than a little bit afraid. And I’ve been doing everything right for a month now.

I believe the checkpoint and backup is for people entering the state, not for people leaving to go north. APS referring to title of your post which is not quoted.

I have reservation to fly back home on May 4th. Waiting to see what happens with flight. I figured the risks are about the same as driving. With a face mask, and disinfectant a 5 hour flight might be the best.

Did you hit the road?

Default Traffic backup?

I just did a google map view of the Georgia/Florida border and I see no backup. I saw the video from several days ago and there was one, but not now.

This opinion is going to be worth what you are paying for it: zero! We flew recently and everyone on the plane wielded Lysol wipes....most sanitized it had ever been, probably. We figured that with driving, with all the stops, motels with questionable sanitation policies, etc., the best solution was to fly...and fingers crossed, we are fine. My brother’s family just relocated from TX to PA....he flew there yesterday and said he was one of five on the entire plane. Anyhow, good luck and safe travels.

I recently flew long distance on Southwest.
Note: that first booked flight was cancelled. Had to rebook.

The airports were virtually empty. Most concessions closed.

There were about 17 people on plane.

No drinks. No water. No snacks.

MHT was virtually empty upon arrival.

The Louisiana/Florida border? What happened to Alabama and Mississippi?

(I once lived within walking distance of the Flora-Bama Lounge on Perdido Key.)

My flying instructor is a Jet Blue pilot. He said he has not flown a plane in the last 10 days with more than 30 passengers on it. He also said that the employee and flight schedule changes daily with cancelled flights.

I understand that on the 150 passenger aircraft they are not putting more than 100 passengers on a flight to allow for "social distancing". It doesn't really matter anyway because so few people are showing up for the flights there is plenty of seating space.

I am still in LA. My next reservation to Boston is for the first nonstop flight from LAX on American May 11. I agree with you that a nonstop flight is still the best option. American has cut back its nonstop flights this month from LAX to Boston with the only nonstop being the red eye. I am hopeful that will not be the case in May. I also hope that Concord Coach will be back in operation then.

There are folks here that will pick you up for a fee. No, I am not one of them. But I do know of folks that do (or at least did). There is also a limousine service.

Bus service as with plane flights may change.

In LA we are wearing masks and gloves when we venture out to acquire essentials and I expect that I would do the same on mass transit (or car shuttle service) even as the curve flattens out.

Pathic is defined as feeling a certain way or having a certain condition. An example of pathic used as a suffix is empathic, which means having the ability to understand someone else's feelings.

"My love for you is very pathic."

Well, Nawlins has "the" Mardi Gras, but (much) smaller Fat Tuesday celebrations take place in other locations, some of which I'm pretty sure are in Alabama and Mississippi. But of course, my gentle point was that Florida and Louisiana do not share a state line, so no cars are being stopped on the "Louisiana/Florida border."

Well...it is a waiting game. I booked on Jet Blue as they still have a morning direct to BOS. I also booked a rental car out of BOS that I can drop off in Wolfeboro after I get my car. I know people think we are bringing the virus with us...however I have been at home and only out with face mask since Mar. 1st. Also once I get home I will honor the 14 day stay at home order. Thankfully a family member can bring the groceries to my house before I get there.

No matter where he posts, you can count on vitriol and hatred from lakeporter, which begs the question “why are you posting here?” Your negativity is not appreciated on a forum such as this one, where members try to help one another, for the most part. So.....do yourself and us a favor and exit right, and don’t let the door hit you in the ### on your way out!

I was thinking the same thing. Here you go: https://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums...ad.php?t=24563

He also has a third alias, kickinbassnh, on that same thread.

Trolls need food to stay alive—just stop feeding him, he's clearly a sad, angry person.

Not sure why the moderator hasn't banned him yet? I'm sure his posts have been reported many times.

Unsure why a writer should be banned at all. Everyone is welcome to their opinion. Just toss it aside if you don’t agree with it. We have all seen and heard what happens when you start filtering an individuals thoughts.

He is clearly a troll. They just join forums to stir the pot.
Probably a 12 year old kid with nothing else to do.
Trolls should be banned, IMO.

Nice in theory, but messy in reality.

Without reasonably strong moderation most message boards deteriorate and wind up the lair of spam bots.

Seen it happen to many boards.

The moderator could do to lakeporter what he's done to me: make it so he must first review and approve any of my posts before they appear: easy-peasy.

Why? Because promoting negativity, in an already negative situation, is repulsive and detrimental to the well-being of the whole.

Think- Sedition Act- 1918.

I get your point- but you weren't talking about Trump.

Oops. Did not mean to thank you for that. The difference with lakeporter is that his negativity appear born of some sort of deep toxicity and is not connected to reality. He attacks people from Mass simply for being from Mass, he attacks Democrats simply for being Democrats--just to pick a couple of examples.

People do occasionally get banned, and with good reason. People also get put on moderation. That is, the moderator reviews their post before letting it go live. That happens when a history of "problem" posts come from one individual.

That is how it should be. Any of us that have been on the forum for a long time have seen people post who do not have the right attitude. Some people never post anything that is beneficial to the site and it's users or continuously post negative rants. I don't think any of us would enjoy seeing the site deteriorate into that.

This is a great resource that we get for free. Over many years I have learned a lot about the lake and local businesses, restaurants, and marinas just from reading the posts on this site.

We all benefit from the tireless efforts of the Moderator to set the tone on this site. There is much that we see, and also much that we do not see, and that is a good thing.

I think he has done, and continues to do, an excellent job.

It's pretty obvious that when a poster posts the same message under different names he is just trolling the site.
