Default Directions Please From Hershey PA

Help! I am coming to the Lake to drown my sorrows after dropping my son at college for the first time. I am coming from Elizabethtown PA (near Hershey). Should I take 84 to Ct?
Cross the Hudson via Tappen Zee?
I have looked at the map for weeks and still not too sure. Any suggestions?

Default Route to sanity

I prefer to take routes that cross portions of states in order to make the trip appear shorter (?). And so ...

I would pickup 84 East in PA, through CT to Sturbridge, MA and then the choice of 290 to 495 or straight on to 495 (Mass Pike is toll highway. Rte 290 is 1 exit and 495 is more). The rest would be the same, 495 to 93 and then I go by visuals (I'll be lost if they ever change landmarks -lol).

I tried maps.google.com and mapquest.com. Google suggested t8 to NJ then pick up s87 to 87 up through NY to pick up Mass Pike (90). Then trave 105 miles through Mass to 495, then the same to Winnie.

Mapquest suggested the same as Google until 87 reached 84, then Mapquest said go through CT as I outlined above.

Rest stops may be a concern if youngers are travelling with you. 84 only has exits to food/phone/fuel/lodging. I'm not too sure about 87 through NY, but 78 all the way to NJ would have rest stops.

Unlike the trip home, the trip to the lake from anywhere I started from has always been the short route. 2nd star to the right, then straight on til ...

Default E-Town to Lake

I attended E-Town, and I go to the lake. Small world.

Anyway, the easiest way is probably to get yourself up to 78E and follow into NJ and then pick up 287 and head to the Tappan Zee bridge. Then take the Merrit Parkway to 91 North to 84 E (Hartford) to the mass pike to 290 to 495 to Everett Turnpike to 93.

Any questions, let me know.

Default Directions to Lakes Region

When you are on I-495, get off at Rte 3 North in Chelmsford, MA. This will bring you to the Everett Turnpike in Nashua, NH which will become I-93 in Manchester. Get off at the Tilton Exit, Rte 3. (I think it is exit 20, but maybe 22). Stop at the Tilton Diner at the exit and try their Shepard's Pie. It is good and the prices are decent at the diner.

Default Which side of the lake are you visiting?

I see some have given you directions to the west side of the lake, but if you are headed to Alton or Wolfeboro, it makes a difference where you would exit Route 93. Let me know, I travel there regularly from Clifton, NJ right off Route 80. From here I make it in 5 hours to Alton Bay.

Default E-Town PA to Gilford

Sorry I forgot to tell you I was going to Gilford (where I have been going for the past 40 + years). The Posts seem to be as devided as the map. :r : Mapquest takes me to Tapan Zee and to 95 - it just seems that I am going south to go north - it is much easire to get there from Port Jefferson, just take the ferry to Bridgeport and gey on to 91, 84 etc. etc.
Anyone else got any other ideas?
I am leaving for school on the 23rd and the lake on the 25th.
Thanks to all!

Default Say no to I-95!

Stay away from I-95 in Conn at all costs! I used to drive to Phila quite often. I remember it as though it was yesterday. NJ Turnpike to 287 over the Tappan Zee. Take 684 to 84. Follow 84 straight up through Conn to the Mass Pike. Then go 290 North to 495 North. Take rt 3/Everett Turnpike/293 North straight up through the Hooksett tolls, where 93 joins.

I like Google's suggested route.

I pass through Hersey on my way to the lake and travel only on non-holiday weekends. Interstates 84 and 95 drive me crazy with stoppages, just plain bad drivers., and steep uphills (both east- and west-bound on I-84 ).

From now on, I'll be taking the full length of the Mass Pike (I-90) from I-87: However many minutes it may be longer (five? ten?), it's far more scenic, relaxing, and safer than any other route I've taken. With just one gas stop from Alton, it was 4½+ hours to the Tappan Zee locale. Crawling in traffic congestion is hardly a sensible penny-pinching alternative vs. the Mass Pike toll charge.

However!!!! You need to be alert for the one sign at that I-90 and I-87 intersection, whether going north or south. Ask Grant!

More "getting here" opinions here.

Default E-Town pa to Gilford

Thanks to all the responders. I have not made up my mind yet how I am going to go. This is my 45th time up in my 47 years of living (although you are not living if you are not at the lake!), and this is the first time my son will not be coming with me, since he is starting college - I'll have to go to peppers to take care of my sorrows!
I let you all know how I got there when I come up next Friday!
Thanks Again!

Mrportjeff:

I just have to ask, how do you know that you have been to the lake exactly 45 times? Also, it seems that since this is the first time without your son (who is 18, I assume) that you started coming to the lake when you were 29. That tells me that it isn't as simple as you have come every summer or twice a year, etc. since the numbers don't work out evenly. This is starting to remind me of one of theose damn Algebra word problems that I hated so much! Anyway, I'm just curious.

Default Math

Actually I was 2 when I started to come to the Lake. I am now 47, and I missed one year when my folks took me to disney instead of the lake (we came back the next year). So if you do the math (year 1 I was 2, year 2 I was 3 year 5 I was 6, Year 10 I was 11, Year 14 I was 16 - that is when we went to disney- Year 20 I was 22, Year 30 I was 32, year 40 I was 42, and year 45 I am 47) Simple really!

Mrportjeff:

Thanks for the clarification. It was that phrase this is the first year that my son won't be coming with me...that confused me. I get it now. Have a nice time at the lake.

Default Litiz Pa to Gilford

OK so I left Litiz (Wilbur Choc.) at 12:00 noon - MISTAKE!!
I took 81 to 84 to Hartford - at 5 pm. ECK!!!
I sat in traffic for an hour then sped right on through but alas my wife and daughter wanted to stop at Sturbridge for the night.
I came up Saturday Morning and the weather could be somewhat warmer (although today was very nice)! In all I would sugest that route - 81 to 84 to 90, to 495 to 4 to 3 to 93
81 and 84 are long and boring roads - be prepared!
Thanks for all the help!

Default question map quest directions

We also use the same route as everyone else coming from Jersey and Pa.This is the way AAA Trip Tik sent us 20 years ago. However if you look at mapquest or AAA they both use the 95 route from the Tap n zee. This has been the case for several years. Our trip from Central NJ with little children and a meal and 2 rest stops takes us at least 71/2 hours.OUr trip is 365 miles. Jeff what a great little town Litiz is and that entire area. I head that direction about 4 times a year to buy meat and outlet shop. And yes Weirs guy portable dvd players are a life saver.
