Lawyer for will etc.?
It's time to get our will from another state updated.
We live in Laconia but on occasion have been known to roam a bit. Who do you recommend? Thanks! P.S. No, I am not calling Saul... |

Use only an Estates and Trusts Attorney
The first thing to make sure of is to use only an Estate Planning / Trusts Attorney. You are doing yourself a huge disservice if you use just a general attorney or worse yet, the real estate attorney that you used to close on your house.
The one I would recommend would be Christine Anderson of Ansell and Anderson in Bedford. She consistently makes the "Top Attorneys in NH" ranking in NH magazine and she came highly recommended to us from quality estate planning firms we used in both MA and CT when we lived there. Most importantly, she is a great person...kind and patient with her clients. |

We opted for a larger firm with a large estate planning group. Our son is an attorney (MA) and advised us that the whole area of trusts and estates is one that is constantly changing and you need to have people totally focused on that. We used McLane Middleton with offices in Concord, Manchester, etc. etc. Have some 25 /- attorneys is the trust/estate department. But we heeded his advice...go big, not small. We had done estate planning a number of times in MA, updating as we went along. But now we are NH residents and needed to focus of the laws here, not MA.
We also interviewed three firms before we made a selection. They usually offer a free discussion consultation. Meredith Man's advice is spot on !!!!! |

We moved from MA to NH and had our plans redone by Elise Salek at Sulloway & Hollis in Concord; she has also helped with estate of a family member in MA as she is licensed there as well. We were very pleased with her expertise, common sense and advice. Highly recommend her.

A nickel's worth of free advice
This thread is very timely. I am assisting an executor in probating a will of a close family member. As a former JAG, I drafted hundreds of wills for soldiers who were deploying. (Simple wills for simple soldiers.) So I know a little about this area of the law. With this particular will there is a fair amount of confusion about specific bequests and how they are funded. Frankly, this section of the will was poorly drafted. We know what the Testator's intent was, so we are proceeding with that understanding. However, if we had a beneficiary who wanted to kick up a stink, we'd be in serious trouble.
The person who wrote the will is a local attorney with a very good reputation. However, the attorney is a traditional country attorney who, in addition to estate planning, also claims to be proficient in real estate, corporate law and tax. When you choose an estate planning attorney, select an attorney who ONLY does estate planning. They most likely will have more touches and be more up-to-date with recent changes in the law. Good luck! |

You might not want to say, but I hope your country lawyer isn’t Susanne Chisholm, because she is in the process of doing a trust for us.

I truly do have respect for the attorney who drafted our family member's will. Maybe he had a bad day, we all have them. But I know the attorney does not work exclusively in estate planning, so I think that can be a big issue. |

Did a simple will with Will software that came free with Quicken. Done. OR Maybe now go to a specialist as stated above. What about trusts? What about taxes? Sadly, I have viewed more than a few lake front properties being sold after the original owner/parents passed. The intent was for all to enjoy the lake. Spouses and money promptly become an issue. Other lawyers involved. Disharmony in previously nice families. |
