Default Damage from drifting ice

Sadly, the docks along Weirs Blvd. that got destroyed with last year's ice are in real danger today. Already one of the new docks is being heaved by the ice. There's a lot of ice left to blow through. Winds are shifting to the north and east but some damage is already done.

Default AltonBay Gazebo

Always wondered why the Alton Bay gazebo doesn't get crushed. Does it have pumps etc. around it. I'm assuming its built on a crib. Could somebody supply
info.

Thanks Dave M

It is Divine Intervention. The Alton Bay Christian Conference Center overlooks and protects the bandstand in the bay.

To somewhat answer your question, it is built upon a crib, and there are not pumps, no circulators. The structure itself usually is clear of the water, except at the highest of lake levels. In the winter, with safe ice, you can actually walk out to the bandstand, and during the winter carnival on the ice, it is usually where the people who are doing the music set up their electronics.

There is current from the Merrymeeting flowing into the bay, and the ice normally recedes beyond Sandy Point before you get big floes moving around. Other than that, I would be at a loss to explain why no damage, at least none since I moved here in 1996.

Of course it could be Divine Intervention....

Janet...I wish the ice was disappearing rapidly. It is difficult to see the beginning of the ice in the webcam. It has not receded much at all for the past week even with the warm temps and rain. The ice has not changed in texture nor white to grey. The beginning of the ice is still only 500 feet off shore. It is rock solid all the way down to Chase Point. It is going to be a while with temps next week at night in the low 20's and high teens. I was hoping to launch at 19 mile bay this weekend. I don't think that will happen.

Thanks for the update on the 19 Mile Bay area. I'm shooting for a March 25th launch from there. If you would be so kind as to icebreak a trail over to the Whortleberry area I would appreciate it!

Default Alton Bay Launch

Curious if anyone knows how much ice is left at the base of Alton Bay down near the state launch? Looking to get out on the lake to get to Sleepers and this is really our only launch point at this time of year.

Thanks

Joe Joyce from NH1 News seems to think ice out is going to be any time now. He was on last night with the camera shot off the roof of T Bones showing the roof of the Spinnaker Cove Yacht Club's Clubhouse. The shot showed NO ICE in Paugus Bay whatsoever. Is Dave Emerson flying today? It would be nice to get an update on the progress

I still see ice off the Weirs on the cams, plus ice in Alton Bay. We are not there yet.

Walter, Paugus looks and feels like spring. I'd agree that Alton Bay is the key to ice out. Still lots of ice. Won't be long now!

I'm probably in the minority here but I'm getting concerned that the "record" ice out is in jeopardy. After tomorrow, you'll only have high temps in the 30's through the weekend. Add to that the potential for a season ending snowstorm Sunday night into Monday and before you know it, the 23rd will be here. The hype for this storm will start tonight as the afternoon models are jumping on the bandwagon for a doozie. So much can and will change as these models have performed poorly all winter. Hang in there and I hope I'm wrong....

There are new images at http://www.ice-out.com/ taken today. There is more ice that I anticipated... though it could still go out before spring!!.

When I drove by the bay yesterday afternoon there was still a lot of dark ice from just past the gazebo out past Sandy Point and beyond. Didn't look like there was passage to Sleepers at all. However, I drove by this morning and it was wide open in the bay and out past Sandy Point. I can't say if it's open enough to get out to Sleepers from my view on Rt 11 but definitely a lot of melt overnight.

Have to assume Winnisquam is clear for complete passage. At least it looked like the south and middle was open to me. Anyone confirm the northern side?

Docks going in this weekend! Boat the following week

What's left of the ice in front of Black Cat is floating around freely and when it hits the breakwater its breaking up pretty easily. It's only about 2" thick and pretty rutty looking. I would think a sunny day and a good stiff breeze could finish it off fairly quickly. https://www.flickr.com/photos/jpcoleman/25228628214/

I saw one of his other broadcast at a different time and he had footage from Emerson. Lot more ice that I thought looking from above. BTW, that TBonescam is on the NH1 weather website. http://www.nh1.com/weather/
Scroll down on the right and there are numerous other cams also.

Default We got the wind

And there goes the rest of the ice.

Took this video of the ice being broken up on my breakwater just before the wind really got going and cleared out the whole area of ice.

Now there are white caps out there.

Looking at Meredith Bay from the town docks, it all looks ice free, except for the small cove just south of the $15-mil triple-H log cabin ......so's it's about 99.44% open water.

And, looking at Centre Harbor bay from the hardware store, I don't see any ice out there......so's it seems like getting the dock and the boat back in should be happening .......... now!

Default What happens if...

So say Ice Out is declared today. Currently it looks like we are in for some cold weather for several days to come. What if one of the ports (like Alton) freezes up again. What happens then?

Default Wolfeboro holding out?

If you zoom in on the Corinthian Yacht Club cam it looks like some ice in the distance which could be blocking the harbor. Hard to tell.

A few years ago ice came back into a port for a few hours. Ice in again was not declared.

We will know soon.

On Emerson's Facebook page they are predicting Ice-Out later today.

Ice will be today. Just a matter of an hour from now. The last hold out is between Mile Island and First neck.

It will never get cold enough to refreeze at this point. At least not to thickness that would survive.

I was at 19 mile bay marina this morning. Stii a great deal of ice. The wind broke up most of it. If you left the marina and headed straight North you would go through slush for about 200 feet to open water all the way out past Chase Island. Hopefully Ice will be gone before the deep freeze coming this weekend.

My very unofficial count is 14 guesses for today in the Ice-Out contest. Many of them in the next couple of hours.

(my first count was 16... again very unofficial)

Wow. This is nuts. I logged in to check the thread and say that a few hours ago I was looking at the rattlesnakecam site and didn't see any ice in any of the webcams. Congrats to whoever won the contest!

Default Confirmation 11:30 am Ice-out

Wow, it is still winter. That makes 32 days of ice in.

Fire up those engines... (well after the storm anyway) and let's get this season underway!

For those of you in part of Winter Harbor.. you may have to wait a day or two to put the boat in.

Roberts Cove is also blocked with ice. Shouldn't take too long for it to be gone though.

Default Ice is out...geese are in!

Someone must have told the geese ice out was declared. These jerks are the first to visit this season. This couple was given a stern warning. They won't be the last to visit.

Hi Guys,
I picked today March 18th at noon, out of dumb luck. Just like work I apologize for being 1/2 hour late.
On a more serious note I was bummed there was not more snow and ice this winter for all of us winter sports enthusiasts. Let spring begin.

Default Another record!

Ice out today. Who has their boat in? It was Ice Out on Sunapee also. Both lakes broke a record since records were kept. That's right suckers, global warming is just political malarkey there is no truth to it at all. Mankind and Industry have no influence on the warming of our planet. It is the cows that fart too much. I'll see you out on the 'saukee starting NOW!

Default ...... cheez-it ....they're back!

Yesterday, these two canada geese, a male and female pair, showed up for their fourth consecutive year squatting on Horse Island for about two months. How do I know they are the same two geese every year for four years in a row? The larger one has an aluminum band on its' left leg with a number starting with a 3.

As soon as these two got here, they got into a big long battle for a few hours with lots of honking with another pair of geese, and I assume it was for squatting rights to Horse Island, as apparently the island is only big enough for one pair of canada geese.

It seems that last May, after six weeks of nest warming egg care by momma goose, one of the local bald eagles was able to scare off the female and destroy all the geese eggs which could have been maybe seven eggs.

Canada geese seem to really really like cheez-its which will float.

Ice out is when the Mount can travel to its ports of call unimpeded by ice. There have been occasions where there has been ice in Chestnut Cove, for instance, that is not in the way of the Mount. Ice elsewhere, including Alton Bay, is out of the way. Ice out is declared. Then the wind shifts, and the ice in Chestnut Cove slowly moves over and blocks the end the Alton Bay again. The Mount can't go down the bay now, but that's ok, because the Mount was able to make its ports of call already. Doesn't matter if the route were to be impeded again, which in likelihood would be for a short time anyway.

There are several marinas recommending not to put inboard or IO boats in the water with up coming Northern Artic blast. I would think the water is above freezing enough to keep the water systems in the engine compartment from freezing. On the other hand I won't bet my on it. The Top layer of water around the hull will probably freeze.

Well it was close to 70 today here at the camp, hard to believe I have to blow my pipes and kill my water system when I leave.

Water hit 39 degrees today according to the fish finder.

Yes I am going up tomorrow to take the water back out of my camp too... Not worried about the dock or water line into the lake..... But I would rather not loose my pump to this arctic blast......
