Default Light and noise on the lake near Diamond Island

Anyone see the light on the lake on the north east side of Diamond Island tonight? Monday around 430.

Yes and I called 911! It looked like two or three people in trouble in either a hovercraft or air Jon boat. They were stuck in the same spot for over an hour. I was watching through a spotting scope but it was quite dark…I saw someone with a net in his hand who kept reaching down in the water and I saw a lot of water splashing around them. When they finally got moving it didn’t look good as I could see they were having a very difficult time and water was splashing everywhere like they were continually breaking through… I hope they are OK…

Well if it was, the loon would have had to have been on ice in the broads. I guess that’s possible….that would also explain the net I saw….and the massive white and yellow lights….

A few years ago, about 17 Loons were "trapped" in the lake's surface by fresh ice. I don't think any survived. They ended-up as ghostly white bumps on the ice--sadly.

Yes that was a very sad incident... My wife who loves loons, cried a little when we heard about it..... Nature sometimes isn't very nice....

Hi Tis,

I haven’t heard anything back at all from any of the authorities involved to include…. Gilford PD, Gilford FD, 911, State Police and NHF&G. All were involved when I called to report what I thought and what looked like someone struggling on the ice.

I’m not sure this was a loon recovery or someone messing around with their airboat and got themselves in trouble. It would of been nice to receive a call back but I am just glad I didn’t hear or read about any casualties on the lake…

It was a loon rescue attempt by Loon Preservation Committee based on a post on Facebook. No news on the outcome yet.

The story below is from last January, but was new news to me for how and why loons need to be rescued from the lake.

TLDR - they molt their flight feathers in winter. If they don't fly to the ocean before the lake freezes, they become "sitting ducks" on the frozen lake as they also can't walk on land/ice due to their rear legs being so far back on their bodies.

I'm guessing most of you all already knew this though!

The owner of Chickadee Station, Moultonborough, told me that getting stuck in the ice is a big problem for loons and ducks. Nature is a tough place to live in.

I agree, it would have been nice of them to call you back! At least one of them you would think! Guess they're too busy. I saw the same post Merrymeeting saw that is was a loon rescue. The loon society in Moultonboro are usually the ones that do that. If it was loons, I hope they saved them. I imagine they are very confused this year with the warm weather and open water.

Why should we interfere with natural processes and try to save the loons?

Tis,

On what site did you see the post regarding the loon / loons rescue?

Thanks!

There wasn’t much mentioned about it. Just stated an airboat was involved in a loon rescue. He didn’t know of the outcome.
