Why not replace the markers?

I've seen many markers that are damaged, tipped over, or without a reflector. Slowly, these are being replaced, I've noticed, but on the other hand, there are markers that are badly in need of attention. I can probably name several off the top of my head. Why not go on a yearly check of ALL of the markers and replace ANY that are damaged in any way. It must be hazardous for boaters who are unfamiliar!

Seems like a reasonable project, I'm sure the answer is the same $$$$$$$$.

why not replace those miserable spar bouys with something that is reasonably easy to spot in less than perfect lighting?

Seriously, a few years ago I heard of a plan to adopt stndard inland waterways markers. Nothing much seems to have come of it, though.

When you think about it the Marine Patrol does an outstanding job on those "thingies" more commonly known as Aids to Navigation or ATONs.

Think about the hundreds of spars and lights on not only our Lake but through out the state and you have to be impressed.

Whenever you discover an ATON missing of off station simply call the NHMP and will get right on it. I have always had courtious, timely results.

I'm certainly not blaming the MP, but you think that the more dangerous markers would be on top of the "replace" list.

With our high-tech guv and all, it would be nice to see the MP use technology to help get the spars replaced. A Web site that allowed a user to mark a map and report a broken spar would make it easier to report problems. Even without a fancy map, it would be useful, and it would not take much to put up a broken spar form on the current state Web site.

They (Coast Guard) have a website and number to call for lights and lighthouses that are not working. And I think they announce it on the weather band for the local area. If there was a central location to keep everyone up to speed, it could be of help.

Of course, Capt. B would not bother with such things.
