He said they tried walking away, but the bear continued to follow. They made it to the southern point, but the bear kept coming...he started yelling at it, even fired up the chainsaw he was carrying to try to scare it away...nothing worked...the bear got closer and closer. With no place left to go and no room to escape, he called me to extract them from the point. We pulled into the channel and they came running out to one of the docks...his chainsaw still running and revving. We picked them up, and as we were heading through the channel spotted it. I don't know if it was just curious or aggressive, but it scared the crap out of them. Another C-Nile rescue mission in the books!

Way to go Steve. Extraction possibly in the nick of time. Luckily the bear didn’t board the boat in hit pursuit.

At first it didn't seem like an emergency to me, but when I thought about it, his fear of bears is probably equal to my fear of Catholic school nuns. A quick extraction needed to happen!!

Is that the first bear you have ever seen on the island?

No, 2nd for me ( we had a little guy up in one of our trees last year), but many have spotted them, especially over the last couple of years. Chris from F&G came out yesterday and walked the island. He thinks either my neighbors got in between mom and her cubs, or it was just a curious teenager and didn't seem too concerned.

For some reason it always interested me to think that bear, deer, etc will swim out to an island. I wonder why they do? Do they smell something? Just decide to go for a swim?

Shouldn't he be over on Bear Island?!?

By the way there is a place that just got listed on Mark yesterday......I'm trying to convince my wife that we need to part with 600k to buy it, but the bear sighting isn't going to help my cause hahaha! Nevermind, that I don't readily have 600k to drop on another house....

As I have my finger on the pulse of everything that goes on out here, I'm well aware. You can tell her that bear swim and maybe they won't be here for long. #54 is a nice place!

Stay away from Bear Island...Lots of bad luck going down over here! Mother nature hasn't been kind. Trees falling, fires, etc.

I don't think that Bear is stupid enough to come over.

Default The BEAR

Hard to believe the Bear is ~60 years old. Anybody else remember the two wooden lobster boats that preceded her, the Camp and the Bear? "Change Day" was quite a bustle in Glendale. Dot's Restaurant had waiting lines.

you'd think that someone who's been on the lake as long as I have would know better... This morning I had to commute to work, so I allowed myself plenty of time to take a leisurely ride in. I got to the Glendale docks about 6:45 ( plenty early ) and as I was getting off the boat, I heard a sound that no boater ever wants to hear...ker-plunk. My key ring fell out of my pocket and into the lake. Got my boat hook out and tried for 15 minutes to grab onto them ( in maybe 4 feet of water ) with no luck. Not wanting to be late for work, I stripped down to my boxer shorts, to the amusement of the folks launching their boats, jumped in the lake and grabbed them off the bottom. Moral of the story...if your wife gets you a float for your key ring, put it on! Dumbass....

OH NO! But looks on the bright side, it wasn't in the middle of the lake but only in 4 ft. of water.

Similar thing happened to my sister years ago but at the dock for the Corinthian Yacht Club in Wolfeboro. Way, way deeper that 4ft. She looked at me like I was going to dive for them. Uhhh, Nope! Luckily it was when Ford gave you an emergency plastic credit card thingie with a punch out key when you bought your car and she had it in her wallet. She made it home to CT and had to make a whole bunch of keys. Best part was I never got wet!

My house has a keypad. My car has a key pad. Boat keys never leave the boat. I don't carry keys--It's kind of like writing checks... a thing of the past.

What car doesn't use some sort of a key or fob? Most of ours are fobs, but they must be present to enter and run the vehicle.

Fords all have keypads. You can leave the fob in the car. Yes, somebody could smash the window. I think smashing the window is to steal visible contents. Of course, in some cars, smashing the window will activate the alarm, or deactivate the ignition or some such. It won't be long before your iPhone facial recognition, or fingerprint technology, will move to your car.

I am always serious! Well, not really, but about this I am. My company decided that the shortened summer schedule they've been promising me for 2 years was no longer an option. I'll still be working up here, but doing things that aren't stress filled and don't suck the life out of me!

It must not have happened yet.

I though I saw you headed out to the island in the rain about 6:45 last night. I figured you were returning from work.

Wasn't me...I was on a tiki boat at 5:30! Maybe it was my neighbor on Mark?? After seeing how versatile the C-Nile was, they bought a C-DORY too! So yes, it happened!

Default No stress?

So retirement has no stress, and you want to teach people to drive/dock their boat who admit from the start they don't know what they're doing? Now, that's stress!

For me, stress is dealing with an always overbooked service schedule, irate customers because everything takes too long / costs too much, 13 hour days including my travel time. Teaching people how to drive / dock their own boats cause me zero stress...tiki Hut boats cause zero stress, in fact that's actually fun for me. See the difference??

The first rule for successful retirement: NEVER make a "to do" list. It's OK to do a shopping list for the hardware store so you have supplies on hand, but don't use that stuff the same day you bought it. No matter the degree of dementia, you will always remember which shelf in the tool shed holds those spare parts. Leave the receipt in the bag so that, 10-15 years from now, you will have a date to tell you how unnecessary that project really was.

Congrats on retirement and the granddaughters!! My youngest son was born on July 12th and we had him out on the boat on Upper Suncook for Labor Day weekend! I might still have a few of those infant life vests if you need a few just let me know, we'll be up to Alton the 8th thru the 15th, be happy to meet up and hand them off!

Nice to meet you at the dock yesterday Steve!

We definitely enjoy the Breeze for lunch, can't beat the view and they do a really nice job, the staff is incredibly pleasant.

Likewise... always like meeting new but familiar people! I know I've been slacking in the views department, but since the commutes stopped, there's not much to see. Maybe a new " views from the tiki Hut boat" is in order??? You tell me!

The more I look at this picture, the more I like it. Sure, a little urban decay seeped in there, but overall I think the composition was right on point!

As I'm spending far more time on other boats these days, there haven't been many views to share, but here are a few. Always nice to see the big boats out and about. The picture of the Mount was taken right after we had an encounter between Eagle and Governor's...she snuck up behind me, and her horn blast let me know that I'm always gonna be the give-way boat in THAT situation! The last one proves once again that the C-Nile is the swiss army knife of boats. Whatever I need... taking my grandson Blake tubing, dry lake transportation, overnight accommodations, or man-cave ( if you know, you know), it handles everything I throw at it!

Happy Birthday! Were you captain of a Tiki today? We saw one by Gov Island Bridge and thought it might be you.

I retired from my car dealer job, but not from work. Been very busy up here for the last couple of months doing things I actually enjoy! Full retirement age for me is 66 1/2, and that will happen this February, so until then I'll keep plugging away, but even after that, imagine having jobs that keep you on the lake 8 hours a day, with no stress , surrounded by new and happy people every day...I don't think I'll want to give that up any time soon!

I know all that news. I see you on FB. I have even given your name a few times. So glad you can do what you love, teaching people to boat and captaining the Tiki boats.

If you zoom in close you can see that a straw is going from the green pail directly up to the pilot's station. She was wondering how she could have drank that pail so quickly.

Here's something we haven't been seeing too much of lately. Thank God my alarm clock ( Holly the dog ) sets herself and woke me up early enough on the one morning I could have slept in this week, otherwise I would have missed it!

Beautiful. Now, if that big ball of flaming gas will bring a little warmth today, I'll be jazzed. We're on our final couple weeks of vacation before school's back in, and it's been COLD.

Have a great day!

We were on our final week up at the family place on Upper Suncook this past week and it was cold and rainy just about everyday! I still managed about 20hrs on the boat though and we made a day trip up to Winni on Weds between rain storms! One of these days I'll meet some of you guys out there and we can share a beer, or box of wine!
