Anyone know what is the oldest lakefront house on the lake and where it's located?

OK, maybe we should qualify this. What is the oldest house with four walls and not a teepee

My interest is in the architecture and features used on the house or camp.

My family's camp is on Moultonboro Neck Rd. and has been in our family since it was built in 1814. It has not been waterfront for about 50 years now but still has a water right of way. It has remained almost unchanged with the exception of indoor plumbing and the woodstove was removed about 15 years ago. It also had cedar shingle siding until about 15 years ago. I have talked more about by family history and the camp on here before, here is the link.

I can email you pictures if you'd like, just shoot me a PM with your email.

Default Family camp

My family's camp was once the brakeman's house for the old Lake Shore Railroad. Situated on Terrace Hill Road in Gilford. Built around 1892.

We had to let it go a few years ago because of taxes. They consider the Broads view with the White and Ossipee mountain range as well as Red Hill in the background reason enough to multiply 8 times in the past 20 years.

The new owners tore the structure down and built a Mcmansion. I told him about the significant of the building and he says 'What past is past. We need to move forward'.

Makes me want to dislike the flat landers from the South even more!

Default Could be on Keniston Island

There are a couple of cottages on the north side of Keniston Island that date back to the 1880s. They were built by railroaders who rowed back and forth to Wolfeboro (2 mi.) for access. They would drag lumber behind their row boats to build the cottages and left their wives and kids on the island while they went to work all week - rowing back Firday night. WOW!

Cool As a NH native.

And a true Republican, Don't Start!
There is a great article on how I feel in May 2010 'New Hampshire Magazine' titled 'Old Man or Big Wind?'. Its about folks that moves into NH and trying to bring their values with them. True NH folks are akin to madmen and NH is America's answer to Australia. NH folks may be crazy, we live up to our motto 'Live Free or Die'.

Better to leave your values, south of the border and leave us alone!

I have read the article in NH Magazine and I spend my weekends and vacation in NH instead of New York because my families values are much more like yours (we are also republicians and my wife loves Glenn Beck) than the liberial state I reside in during the week (not to mention we love the lake) so I really dont like being called a "flatlander".

Default Back on topic

Our house first showed up on the tax rolls in 1908. Back in the 70's ( I think)
it was featured in a national coffee commercial. I regularly scour youtube to see if it shows up...so far no luck.

Oh, I LOVE your house. I remember the commercial so well! Wasn't it owned by Dr. Scholls at one time?

Thanks tis, we love it too! I know very little of its history. We hear fragments here and there. I've never had the time to really research it. I'm too busy enjoying it!

Default Boulevard Cottage

Ours may not be the oldest, built in 1906, but we still love it. Here are some before and after shots, we've owned the place for a little over 4 years.

Thanks,
Bill & Sue

It is nice seeing the old "camps" being restored rather than torn down!

Default Terms

So BH throws out the term Flatlander and people get ruffled feathers. So I am going to start a separate thread to allow people to define what the believe a flatlander is. Or isn't.... Just because your for south of the Notch, by some beliefs, or South of Concord by others... doesn't mean your a flatlander. However having spent a great deal of time in Northern Vt. and Northern NH.... I can tell you there are some defining traits.

I bet you had no problem cashing the check that the "flatlander" gave you for your property.

Default Southern Democrats?

Maybe flatlander is the wrong term. Ir was adopted from my grandfather who was originally from Vermont and my Dad.

Maybe we should call those folks that come up here with their ideology 'Southern Democrats'.
