I guess the Gilford Fire/ Rescue boat didn't get the memo that I'm still on the lake... she's gone!

We had lunch at The Breeze yesterday, I missed seeing C-Nile at the dock, figured it was out already.

Oops, view of the middle dock was partially blocked and it was drizzly so we didn't go down to walk the docks like we usually do.

Default Calculated Risk

One day you'll hit a log or that Yamaha will fail or have some water in the gas and these Northern Pass jaunts won't be so much fun with no one on the water to get you.

Thank you for the tails of your adventures! Always love seeing the pictures of the lake in different conditions. Have a great winter. I am hoping for some good ice this year.

Personally I was hoping you'd wait for 1/2" of ice on the harbor before yanking the boat. But seriously as you said your timing was near perfect, got it out just in time to not be dealing with this messy storm.

I really enjoy the pictures and comings and goings of C-Nile, thanks for keeping this thread active! Have a great winter.

You're very welcome....it's fun for me too! One year I waited a little too long and Glendale was snowed in...the truck I had couldn't pull the boat out ( wheels were spinning ) , but luckily, my buddy Codeman was there in the parking lot, and I attatched a tow strap to the front of my truck and the back of his, and the boat came right out. Having to witness his pics and social media posts about my failure and his truck's superiority , I decided there and then to never have to go through the humiliation ever again, so now I watch the forecasts like a hawk and pull the boat before snow!

I have one of those friends. But in my defense, the the boat was on it's fourth fuel sender and the gauge still didn't read right. He made sure to spread this picture around!

Don't get me wrong, I take pictures of other's misfortune as well ( in this case me having to tow my neighbor's broken down boat in for repair ), but you don't see me posting that humiliation on social media! Oh, wait...I just did... nevermind...

In #627 above, is this really candid, or posed? Where is the photographer standing?
Easy when the boat is at rest. I remember refueling in the water ski marathons, WOT, skier, driver and fuerer/observer. We knew ahead of time that we didn't have enough fuel to do the entire 60 mile route at WOT without extra fuel so it was a planned mid-air refuel, twice. For those involved in the races, this was 60 miles x 2. two days commemorating Cap'n Jack Goodhue's 60th birthday and 120 years in operation for Goodhue Boat Yard. Very rough both days, many DNF's.

No, not staged. But I wish it was.

The photographer was on his boat, taking pictures after he brought his lawnmower gas can to me. He lives on Scenic Drive in Gilford facing the Broads. The gauge still showed just under 1/4 full and I was headed to Mountain View to get gas.

Among other things wrong with that boat, I let out about 75 feet of anchor chain when the boat stopped and had to pull it back in by hand because the anchor windlass wasn't working. Line would have been much easier and lighter than all chain!

The boat, a Regal 2700 ES, was the worst boat I have ever operated. It looked great but the handling and mechanical end of things was terrible. It was impossible to keep it level, no matter what you did with the trim tabs and drive. It just rolled from side to side.

It had numerous electronic dashboard failures and it was delivered with a bad U joint in the drive that cause a vibration. Even a factory technician from Regal couldn't find the issue causing the vibration. It was not purchased locally but a Silver Sands mechanic found the problem and it was repaired under warranty.

Thankfully, that boat was sold a few years back.

I also remember an " out of fuel " distress call I received one night...seems this big Monterey was taking an evening cruise and ran out of gas. I brought out a 5 gallon can, but the boat was so empty it wasn't enough to get the engines running. I had to tow them back to their dock next door. Had I known that the snowy Glendale photoshoot would take place, I would have stopped mid-tow and taken plenty of pics of THAT operation!

Default Picturesque!

Yes, very picturesque. But, it makes me recall times when we weren't so environmentally sensitive and we only salted the strip down the middle of the road and the snow was gone in two days. Now, we care about the environment, we salt everything and the road never gets snow covered. I guess nobody owns chains anymore.

I was driving up from MA last night, once I was above Nashua it was changing to freezing rain then snow. Was pretty bad Manchester and above, a few cars off the road.

Chains? Studded tires? Not many of either in this region any more.

This is the first season I have bought studded snow tires. Now that I have them I notice a lot of cars with them. Way more than I expected.

Default Views of the C-Nile

Was kind of a slow late afternoon at work, and I somehow ended up on the Breeze website... I started looking through the pictures they had posted.... funny how many of them included the C-Nile or our vehicles... like Where's Waldo... come for the view, stay for the food! ;-)

We lunched at The Breeze today, walked down to the docks after. Was beautiful out, sunny and warm. Looking out I couldn't lose the feeling that something was missing at the dock ... something there most of the year .... can't quite think of what it might be ....

You're right....sure seems empty without the fireboat there! . Hopefully, you won't see as much of the C-Nile there this year. I really want to cut my commuting work days to 3, and just drive tiki boats on my non commuting days. Then again, I'll have to leave it at Glendale when I drive to Laconia, so maybe it'll be there everyday after all. Island logistics can be a bitch sometimes!

I don't get errors, just the "Notice: This is an old thread." banner at the top.

Steve, you're one of those guys that goes in the cabin, closes the door, and hangs out in the boat in the driveway, aren't you.

If it stayed in my driveway, I probably would! My island neighbors also have a Gilford mainland home and graciously allow me to store it there for the winter ( in exchange for putting up with their nonsense all summer?? ), and today was the first time back since December. Getting her ready for launching.

If I'm at the lake, I'm guilty of that. It's kinda like putting your dog in a crate...over time, it becomes a safe, secure place for them. They learn to enjoy their " quiet time".

Watch out for Mike! He should have the new toon in the water shortly. He'll probably be over. If I can straighten out everything that has gone wrong today and make my way to the boat I'll swing in.

But you know, I've always found that kind of work to not feel like work, very enjoyable. I'd take lake house work over work-work any day!

I'm leaving for South Carolina on Friday and didn't want to leave the boat at Glendale for 2 weeks, so when I came in this afternoon, I dropped it at Mt.View. Because it's early in the season and with only the vehicle I drove up in, I had to walk from the yacht club to Glendale in today's mess. I don't mind the exercise, but I don't think Holly is too happy looking like a wet seal.

I did notice that C Nile was at the “8 hour” dock for a while. It appeared to have a list to starboard, box wine overload being the suspect.

Keep in mind that both batteries, all the cabinetry, and stove/ heater are all on the starboard side, but you go ahead and believe whatever you want! ( there might be a little wine on that side too )

I know from past years early and late season nobody seems to care if boats stay at Glendale overnight, but I wasn't sure when the ticketing started...better safe than sorry. I'll be spending enough money in Hilton Head, and wanted to avoid fines that double every night!

With the general flow of water from the main lake through the Weirs Channel to the dam in Lakeport, I wonder how much debris ends up at the dam. I would think, especially in the spring, it would be a substantial amount.

I guess you won't be wearing your fuzzy slippers onto the dock to get into the boat.

Well the Tiki Hut boats are back in the water and ready to go! I'm pursuing my shortened work weeks at the dealership and have a meeting scheduled with my boss tomorrow to discuss my plan. I don't know about anyone else, but at this stage in my life, I look at obituaries. When I read that people younger than myself are dying of "natural causes", it scares the crap out of me. The stress of working the service desk is sucking the life out of me, but driving the tiki boats is fun and like a breath of fresh air, so the more I can do that, the better off I'll be. Wish me luck!!

My son, daughter, and their cousin have their annual Tiki Boat ride booked for July 22! And I totally relate to your outlook. I've pretty much had it with Corporate America and just want to work for "fun" at this point....

Couldn't agree more! People ask me why I stay in my current school (I'm an administrator) rather than move on to bigger things - and more money. My job, and life are incredibly low stress and I enjoy going to work. Life is too short to suffer at work if you don't have to - I may make a few financial sacrifices, but the low stress and summers off (and at the lake) more than makes up for it.

Maybe my retirement career move is to drive Tiki boats - being out on the water with people who are there to have fun sounds awesome!

As I was loading the boat at Glendale early yesterday evening, I got a call from my island neighbor. He was frantic...he and his wife had been walking the trails on Mark doing some cleanup, and at the top of the hill noticed that a medium size bear was following them. He said they tried walking away, but the bear continued to follow. They made it to the southern point, but the bear kept coming...he started yelling at it, even fired up the chainsaw he was carrying to try to scare it away...nothing worked...the bear got closer and closer. With no place left to go and no room to escape, he called me to extract them from the point. We pulled into the channel and they came running out to one of the docks...his chainsaw still running and revving. We picked them up, and as we were heading through the channel spotted it. I don't know if it was just curious or aggressive, but it scared the crap out of them. Another C-Nile rescue mission in the books!

Good job Steve. Did the F & G remove the bear? Is there a second chapter here? 911 doesn't answer Mark Island? Guys like Steve make us all proud to be Islanders.

Awwww shucks... Neighbor called them, but I don't think bear extraction is something they do out here.
