Anyone donate a boat?

We lost our jobs and cannot afford to continue to boat. Beyond being heartbroken, we need to sell (or donate) our boat ASAP - before the summer storage fees kick in!

Has anyone donated a 28' boat - does anyone have any advice for selling other than the obvious (CL, EBYA, Yachtworld, Boatboss, etc.) - we need some help please! Been boating for 28 yrs - crying already

Sorry to hear that, but you're doing the responsible thing.

What kind of boat? Pictures? I'm in no position to buy one, but it may help with getting some advice.

It is early in the boating season, so that's good. Donating is always a good deed, but right now it sounds like you need the quick cash. Can the marina help move it for you?

I just donated my 26 year love affair, 1984 Thompson 19ft to a charity "Kars 4 Kids" The boat was on a trailer that went with it, and both were in usable condition. The people I dealt with were great to work with. Miles Marine transport in Gilford took the boat to a local auction site. They will send a certificate after the auction for your tax credit,

Hope this will make it easier for your loss.

I had an old sailboat, since the manufacturer went out of business back in the 70's, some of the parts were getting difficult to replace. So I donated it to the Eagle Scouts in Maine back in the late 90's. I was able to write off the fair market value on my income tax plus they came and get the boat which had no trailer. The Eagle Scouts by the way still maintain and use the boat for training.

wow - Eagle Scouts sounds good - captain was an 'almost' Eagle - and taught the girl scouts snow igloos on an overnight! Thank you for the suggestion!

No - we don't need 'quick cash' altho 'some' cash would certainly be welcome! We just wish the beautiful boat would not be destroyed and the teak could be used - teak is ??? very expensive these days!

I'm so sorry for the circumstances.

We have never donated a boat, but have donated two cars to Recycle For Gold (Special Olympics). They picked up and sold the vehicles at auction. We got a receipt after they sold the vehicles so that we could write off the donation on our taxes.

Honestly, if either vehicle had been in decent shape to sell, we would have been better off financially to do that rather than donate. If your boat is in good condition, you will probably be better off selling than donating, even if you have to take a hit on the price.

Hang in there and hoping that things turn around for you soon.

If you price it very right, I would expect it to sell quickly. I sold my boat in 3 days on craigs list.

Remember, if you donate it, you get portion of it as a write off to your taxes, but you may make out better if you price it much lower and sell it. Price is well below normal retail. Even half expected retail would be a good start and probably better than you may get by donating.

Good luck, it's tough to sell under these circumstances.

Have you considered renting the boat? Depending on your particular circumstance, the rental fee you collect might cover some or all of your expenses.

Sorry to hear of you job. Obama canned the F22 program and ended my 33 year career in the industry. I did get back in and Obama did it again.

I would think twice before donating a boat or car to charity.....used to be that you could write off the book or market value.Now you can only write off the actual amount it brings at auction which is usually a fraction of the real value.
Better to sell it yourself and,if you wish,give some of the cash to your favorite charity

FWIW - when making a donation for tax write off purposes you do not get a dollar for dollar credit. You only get your tax rate on the $$$ donated and need to be itemizing. As mentioned above, it is almost always better financially to sell outright.

The New Hampshire Boat Museum in Wolfeboro have a boat auction next month in Wolfeboro. They auction off many boats and other nautical items. Usually over 100 people show up for the auction and do spend money. They will pick your boat up and deliver it to the auction. . Their phone number is 603-569-4554.

I wound up putting my boat on Craigslist for a totally low ball amount and it sold in a few weeks. If you really really need to get it gone you need to sell low as no one is really buying boats right now. As you can see by even the prices and deals on new boats. I just got a voucher in the mail from Monterey Boats for a certain amount just to try to get me to come in and by a new boat. It is tough out there...

Sorry don't low ball that boat it is very nice. I kow it is tough but try to make some kind of deal with the broker as far as storage goes. If your sales guy is any good at all he shouldn't have any trouble selling that boat at all.
