i have had three houses for over 30 years and have always shut the heat off fully in the winter. I have professional plumper blow out the pipes. I leave electricity on but water and heat off. I couple of times when i had a bad plumber i had a leak in ceiling but other than that no problems. I have forced hot water and a large house so heating to 40-50 would cost thousands.
