Default Someone's last ride of the season

The ice is forming quick up near Ambrose Cove marina (the old Aries), to the point you couldn't navigate a boat south from there. Mid afternoon, I saw one boat pulling another across the lake towards the marina. They were going slow and snaking around the skim ice. In 15 years, the earliest I've seen it safe to walk on the ice is December 17'th - and within a week it had opened up again. This may be a record year!

Here in north central MA, the ponds I pass on the way to work skimmed over as of yesterday morning, and the thickening continued today.

It's the earliest I can recall in several years.

But it does look like it will be somewhat warmer next week.

Default Ice in Gilford

I've seen some ice along the shore of Lily Pond (at the end of the runway at the Laconia Airport) as well as some in Glendale, Smith's Cove and in among the slips at Fay's over the past couple of days.

Somehow I don't think it will be a repeat of last winter with good boating going on during 65 degree weather in January.

Yup, it sure appears that it'll offset last year's late ice in.

So when can we start to "challenge" ABCCC for the winter contest ?

The WinniFlyer is hungry and needs to be fed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those interested, Lake Ossipee, Lake Wentworth & Crescent Lake are all frozen over! Looks like a more normal winter this year so far.

Default be careful on the ice

Remember that when the ice forms the ice fishing holes float back to the surface. Watch your step and don't trip in one

Lord, no more ice hole comments please. I landed on moderation last year because of them!

I noticed yesterday morning that Paugus Bay has iced over about 1/3 of the way out from Rt. 3, and it was still like that this a.m.!

Default 36 degrees and counting

Ice formation is going to start to accelerate. Looks like we're a couple of weeks ahead of a "typical" winter -- if there is such a thing. The upcoming wind will hamper things a bit but the overall projected trends in air temps will support rapid ice formation once it calms again. It won't be long now.

I noticed between last night and this morning that:

a. Paugus Bay has not lost any ice.
b. Weirs Bay is beginning to form ice between the public beach and the pier about 1/3 of the way out.
c. Winnisquam seems to have iced over completely in the lower section beside Rt. 3 behind the Anchorage.

Ice in by New Years?

Default Alton Bay Mount Dock

Looking at the Spencer Hughes web cam it looks like the ice is close to the Mount Dock. Is it up that far?

Will there be a bed race this year?
