Cate Park was dedicated in 1967 on the site of what had been the Ann Inn and then, from the early 1940s onward, an Esso Service Station. At one time, Fred E. Varney was proprietor. Also, depicted in the background, is the old Lakeshore R.R. Station which is now the Dockside Restaurant.

White's Restaurant—
'Can't help with the railroad-car diner, but Charlie's Diner became White's Restaurant before it became Mast Landing.
When I worked in one of those pits, the obvious dangers were the scorpions at the bottom! (This was in South Miami, FL, where I worked on some interesting foreign cars, including the Amphicar!). |

We are talking about two A & P s. It was where the Stationery Shop used to be which is now Back Bay Clothing and then moved up the hill where Hunter's Shop and Save is now. The First National was where Dive Winnipesaukee is now but then moved to where Harvest Market is now.

A neighbor's incredibly luxurious three car garage has a grease/oil pit in the center bay built by Bruin's right winger, Ukraine hockey player Dmitri Khristich in about 1998 so's he could work on his old Lada car built back in the U.S.S.R.
For a 1970's boxy Lada is best to have a grease pit. If you put that car up on a lift, the wheels or something could fall off car. Both the Plymouth Walmart and Laconia Valvoline have oil/grease pits mostly for doing oil changes since not too many grease fittings, anymore.

The Wolfeboro Shopping Center was built in 1958 by Henry Hopewell and Frank Whipple of Tamworth. These buildings are on the original site of back bay, which was slowly filled in when the town used the area as a dumping site. Stinchfield's Market?
Quote:
Supervisor Gordon Colby hired me to assist. Many poured concrete foundations and wooden window screens have my handiwork in them. To replace damaged screening, you can pry out the wooden strips and staple-in new screening. I used copper screening, when the time came for mine. (Our place was built by Fred E. Varney Co., and no rodent has ever got inside--except for a chipmunk who followed me through the door after I refilled the bird feeder). The Lada, built in the USSR, was a FIAT, built under license. You still see them in modern YouTube dash-cam videos of Russian traffic crashes--which are epic! (Lada was not the worst car to come out of Russia). I never heard Henry used, it was always Harry Hopewell. 'Quirky guy, who has since passed away. New to me, Hopewell Point Road could have been named after him, but he also had a remarkable brother. Could that Wolfeboro open-air market have been Stinchfield's Market? |

HopewellPoint was named after the Hopewells but he was the son. They lived in the house with the red metal roof.

What a Concept 💡
Elm trees on Elm Street! (Early maps showed Elm Street running down to Wolfeboro's lakefront...)
Could that be a horse-drawn Molley-the-Trolley on the right? Maybe a "Bob's Hot Dogs" wagon from 120 years ago? |

Laconia Car Company has a description in Wikipedia. It says it manufactured railway cars in Laconia from 1848 to 1928. It occupied seven acres of downtown Laconia and employed as many as 500 people.
1914 was the last year of profitable operation for the company. It had been focused on electric trolley cars and became unprofitable when trolley riders switched over to automobiles like the Ford Model T, 1908-1927, the car for every man, a car that most people could actually buy. "Employment increased to a thousand workers by 1912, but focus on electric railway cars made the company uncompetitive for conventional railway vehicles as electric railway riders began using automobiles, and 1914 was the last year of profitable operation for the company." "Production shifted to plywood motorboats before the company closed in 1928." When a company, 1848 to 1928, switches from railroad cars and then to electric trolley cars and then to baggage and mail cars and then to plywood motorboats ...... it is not a happy future and likely to close ..... and close, it did in 1928. Is there an historical sign in Laconia, somewhere, on the Laconia Car Company, 1848-1928, a state historical sign similar to the Belknap College sign, 1963-1973, that's in Center Harbor?

From post # 83. I saw Bob today and he said there was a store where his cottages are now on Robert's Cove Road. So that is his place, just to confirm.

Kamler Buick Chevrolet
Yes, that's him. My grandparents lived on Springfield Point very close to the Kamler's home there. I have very fond memories of my years growing up and visiting them all in that area. The Kamler's, Buckman's, Graham's all a great group over there- I'm sure I'm forgetting so many.
Well I can tell you the "extra love" worked, even though it ended up in California, rust was never an issue. |

Definitely not the 1980's.
I don't know the exact time frame that the Back Bay was filled in but I would guess sometime during the 1940's or 1950's. After that time Government regulations likely would not have ever allowed it to be done...... |

The shopping center where TD Bank and the basketball and fields etc in back were the town dump. I think they just probably dumped in the water and that started to fill it in and then they covered it when the moved the dump out to 109A. I remember before the shopping centers were there the road was more like a causeway and sometimes it got flooded. I was so young-I wish I could remember more.

The Recycling Center?
I remember a short drive to the dump. Today, I have to plan a trip to the dump on my monthly schedule.
Is the shopping center sinking? A rounded concrete curb has been installed to keep deep puddles from flooding the packaging store. As for "causeway", a heavy rain a few years ago had a kayak used to get around the parking lot. That picture made the cover of The Granite State News! |

That's Point Breeze before the big fire. The boathouse on Sunset Point was (is) just beyond the property line, and what a challenge to us Point Breeze kids to get over there, and even out to the "summer house" at the end of the point!
My mother was brought to Point Breeze for the first time in 1924 when she was one month old. As you can see from the photo, there were no cabins then, just big rooming houses, and Charles Stevens would not tolerate her crying at night, so my grandpa would walk her on the beach and through the woods to quiet her. She brought my Dad there in 1947, just before they married, and I came for the first time at the age of 3 months in 1950. My family was there every summer from 1924-1982 which was the last year. It was remarkable that the same families tended to have the same vacation times, and I could still tell you, for the first three weeks in August, which cabins #1 - #32 "belonged" to which families, because it was (almost) always the same people. My parents, sisters, and two sets of grandparents had 3, 4, and 5. My cousins were usually "on the other side", where one of the old rooming houses "the Boulders" still survived. Lots of memories of times gone by. I live about a half mile away, on Lake Wentworth, and I'm raising my kids there. |

Ok, since nobody commented on Clearwater Lodges I'll bite. It has been run by the Vinnicomb family since some time in the late 50s I think. The granddaughter and her husband now run it although Herb is still living there. If you remember the storm that came through last summer, it hit Clearwater hard, knocking down trees and damaging several cottages. It is on North Main St below the Libby Museum/Tuftonboro line. It is beside Piping Rock. When we were kids some guy and I think his name was Matt Brendell owned Piping Rock and he had a big megaphone ( I think that's what it's called ) and yelled to all his guests on it. They would water ski and when somebody would successfully get up he would yell out "Atta Boy". It was pretty funny.

If I remember correctly the Klickety Clack closed down only about a year or so ago and a high-end antique/home furnishings shop went into the space.

There is a group that is putting together a train museum of sorts by the railroad station. They are going to have some kind of layouts, not sure what but I think they will be working trains from what I hear.

Klickety-Klack
I love Klickety-Klack. Grandchildren love it too.. An easy walk from the docks, up the old rail bed to the Falls. Wish the train were still running, but the walk along Back Bay is nice.

What a beautiful town Wolfeboro would be if all the old hotels were still standing. The shoe factory was huge wasn't it?! People moved down from Canada to work there.

Rust Pond Memories
Wow, I remember staying there with my mother and grandparents many, many, many years ago! Breakfast was delivered to your cottage and other meals in the main house.
I am 75 and I was probably 5 or 6 then so other details are a bit sketchy! I am sure the flag only had 48 stars! |

That car looks like it must be a 1938 Packard Model 1600, six-cylinder sedan.
What a dull neglected finish ..... needs a good Simonizing!

The vehicle does have "suicide doors" if that helps someone identify the year and the model.
I don't see any railroad tracks so presumably the train no longer ran to the dock (but I think someone said the tracks were removed in the late 20's). |

Brook at Wentworth...
The culvert suggests a location adjacent to the park by 109E and Sandy Road. A wide, boggy brook empties into Wentworth near there.
BTW: FLL's Packard ID is correct but check out Chevrolet of the same year. |

I'm pretty sure Brightwaters is now the Windrifter on Lake St.
Are you sure that's Huggins? It looks kind of narrow but maybe it's just the angle we are seeing it from. |

Doesn't that look different to you than the other picture Top? Or is it me?

Forest Road...Could Be...
I don't know when Forest Road got electricity, but the Wolfeboro Airpark got it in 1949.
IF that's Forest Road, a large barn is missing, but may have been built since. The property would be the old Goodwin Farm. An apple orchard formerly extended far down Forest Road. (There are no more apple trees, as most of the orchard has been sold and converted to residential properties). It wasn't difficult to imagine how Forest Road would get its name from back then. Even thirty years ago, one would drive through a dark green tube cut through a forest of Maples and White Pine. Lake Winnipesaukee wouldn't be revealed until one reached Carry Beach. |

Old Wolfeboro
Having spent a lifetime traveling Forest Road, I think this house is the big one on he right side of the road going toward the beach.

See how the old hospital looks wider and not so tall and narrow? That's why I think the other picture is not the hospital. What say you McDude?

In the hospital image there appears to be an extension or addition on the right hand side that I don't see in the other photo.

Exactly what I think too. It is now owned by the Shaws but was owned by the Ericsons for many years before that. It was also that area that was hit hard by the hurricane of '38. The Piper Farm, the Folsom farm etc.

Hmm, I do wonder what that tall ladder is for. It's can't be a gangplank of some sort?

www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brewster_Academy has a small photo or drawing of this building labelled 'Brewster Academy in 1909' plus a second photo of same labelled 'Brewster Academy's Academic Building, where most classes are held.'
Wikipedia says annual tuition is now $62,600/yr and it was free to all ye Wolfeboro and Tuftonboro residents up until 1964. So, at ye olde price of FREE there must be some Brewster alumni, growing up in ye local neighborhood of ye Tuftonboro and ye Wolfeboro ....... on-board this forum, here and present? .... ..... if yes, may we hear from ye! At ye olde free tuition, that had to be a super steal-of-ye-deal price tag for a Brewster Academy, grades 9-12 high school education, wouldn't ye agree ....... hear ye, hear ye ..... ye olde alumni who attended ye old academy ..... formerly named Wolfeboro and Tuftonboro Academy! So, here's a great big, all YE together, here ye ....... to that olde pre-1964 Tuftonboro & Wolfeboro ..... freebie Brewster Academy education ..... those were ye good olde Tuftonboro & Wolfeboro days! ...... most assured YE! ...... recalling ye olde days back then, there, at Ye Olde Brewster Academy! Please do ye best to channel ye character here of Edith Bunker played by actress Jean Stapleton playing ye piano while singing 'Those were THE good olde days!" ....... because those really were YE GOOD OLDE DAYS! ...... a free Brewster Academy education for local students ...... just imagine ye that!

Welcome back Top-Water. And thanks for more pictures. I'm always intrigued by these old pix that show so many people, considering that,as of 1970, the population of Wolfeboro was ~3000. Obviously less in the 19th century.
