I assume you need to have the iPad with 3G service?

BINGO !!

Two things to consider--
(1) you must have reasonable cell coverage
(2) Any GPS App burns the battery life of the device like crazy

I'm sticking with my Garmin and $10 downloaded map of the lake

I agree with Phantom.

I use my 'droid once. 3G coverage is spotty and my battery was dead within and hour! I will stick with my Garmin and $10 map.

I was thinking of trying Garmin's $10 map, but then I read the differences between the Bizer map and others:

http://www.bizer.com/jrcompar.htm

Even if half of those differences are true, the $90 difference will probably save me a lot in repairs.

Perhaps for the $10, I may try the Garmin map to see if there is a real difference that I can detect.

I do wish that Garmin would allow me to install multiple maps on one SD card and select them from a menu. But if I can get a Garmin $10 file, I'll compare it to the Bizer and let you know how different it is.

That compares Bizer and Duncan's paper map. http://www.bizer.com/jrfaq.htm#WHYBIZER (Question #21) shows some of the GPS differences as well.  It would appear that they are missing any buoy that was added since 2003.  As Bizer says in the FAQ, if your objective is to keep from getting lost, then the $10. Garmin will probably work just fine.

When you're comparing, also look at the area north of Eagle Island; the north side of Timber Island; Look how deep they say the water is on the west side of Wolfeboro Neck; etc.
