If they use one of the 747's, Hanscom AFB not Boston Logan would be better for security purposes.

Manchester can take 'heavies' now but they'd probably use Pease because there is still an Air Force presence there, if they didn't use Hanscom.

I would think they would use Pease too. It would be closest and it is a great runway and as you said, the AF still have a presence there. I wish Pease would get another commercial airline in there.

OMG, you should send that to him at his Wolfeboro address.
That is an awesome Idea.....
Wouldn't that be something, having to hold the Mount out in the Broads while he did his arrival and departures?
LOL!

I was living in Wells, ME when the Papa Bush was president, and lemme tell you... nothing could screw up summertime traffic like Team Pres coming into town... and that was before 9-11 - security wasn't as tight back then as it is today!

And isn't there an airport in Wolfeboro or Tuftonboro?

There used to be an airport in Wolfeboro on Wolfeboro Neck but someone decided it would be better suited as a Condo Park. Trouble is, nobody was buying or building. I think the Marriot's own the land now.

There's no airport in Tuftonboro. Nearest airport on the Wolfeboro side of the lake is on Rt 25 in Moultonboro. NB

The Marriott's do own whatwas once the airport. It was subdivided into building lots with septic systems and underground utilities in place before the bottom dropped out of the housing market. The Marriott's bought the whole shebang. They have close ties to the Romney's and it would be an easy place to land a helicopter. However, I recently talked to someone who worked in the White House under Bush and asked about how he would get into town if he were President. The answer I was given was that he would fly into Pease on Air Force One and then by helicopter right up to the neighborhood which could be the hospital, golf course, Clark Park. There would not be a lot of traffic tie ups, but the people who live down Clark Rd. In the area where he lives will have tough screening to go through every time they go in or out whenever he would be in residence.

Let's assume he will land in Pease and drive the motorcade in normal situations. According to the map thing it's 47 minutes. It's 42 minutes to Laconia, but that means a smaller plane or a transfer of planes.

In emergency situation they can land Marine One on the golf course or in the lake! The usual helicopter is amphibious.

The runway of the old Wolfeboro Airport is now a road, but it really would make a better runway than what used to be there.

When Obama visited Acadia National Park in Maine, he arrived in a Gulfstream III. Clinton also flew on a Gulfstream III

Who knows what they'll use but given the short flight from Andrews AFB to New England it makes more sense to fly the smaller planes.

Again, I will be surprised if they don't use Sanford. They already have the logistics worked out and can heli from there.

I was in Claremont in 94/95 when Clinton visited. I have seen a fair share of motorcades

Can see Mitt doing a water landing and jumping out onto a waiting PWC for a beach landing to grill burgers with the family.

Default Romney gets secret service protection

We don't have to wait for Romney to become President we can see what it will be like this summer:

TAMPA - Mitt Romney's presidential campaign has been informed that it will start receiving Secret Service protection on Thursday, two campaign sources and a senior Republican tell ABC News.

Secret Service protection is being given to the campaign not because of a specific threat but because of the increase in crowd sizes as the primary season has progressed over the past few weeks, according to the sources, who refused to be identified because they don't have authority to comment on such matters publicly.

The Secret Service is charged with protecting presidential candidates in addition to the president himself, and providing protection to a candidate before he secures a nomination has become fairly common. Such decisions are made by the Department of Homeland Security, in consultation with congressional leadership.

The Romney campaign, which has long traveled with private security of its own, did not request Service protection, and was approached about the additional security steps in the weeks following the New Hampshire primary, the sources told ABC News.

Officials with the campaign and the Secret Service declined to comment on the decision.

Romney will become the only current Republican candidate with Secret Service protection. Herman Cain became the first candidate to receive Service protection, in November, but he ended his candidacy in December.

Default Mitt's NH Hometown

Interesting stuff, folks.
I lived on Martha's Vineyard for about seven years, and during that time Clinton visited regularly. I can tell you that at that time (pre-911, remember), the "disturbance" to public places basically traveled in a large circle around the man (or Mrs. Clinton)...So if he was staying at his condo, you wouldn't know unless you went out that way. And when he came into town, the area immediately around him was upset but you could be a few streets over and never know.
Still, I have to echo some of the comments from those experienced w/ the Bush compound in Maine. A lot depends on where the POTUS is, and whether it can be easily protected - or, "cut off", to put it another way.
BTW, I thought some of you may be interested in the Oct. 30 post on this Lakes Region blog about Romney and his relationship w/ the Town of Wolfeboro... http://lakesregionofnewhampshire.blogspot.com/

About four months from now, probably on the first Tuesday in January, is the NH presidencial primary election. I definitely expect to bump into Mitt, Rick, & Barack over the next couple months, down at the new Meredith-Family Dollar, all waiting in line at the check-out to pay for their $3.50 frozen pizzas!

"Well, just look who's here........helloooooo Mr Mitt!" .....very smart to be stopping in here....this new store is located smack dab in the middle of Meredith's year round, full time, local neighborhood people, and except for the last 2008 election, Meredith almost always favors the Republican candidate in November.

I wouldn't read much into the Times article. Not front page news. Neither is Romney out here. L. A. doesn't pay attention to much but itself.

If you ask me what will happen to the Lake if Romney wins, it will gain some notice, as in how Kennebunkport did with the Bush's. However, nobody West of the Mississippi really has a clue where Kennebunkport is, they didn't schedule a trip to go see it, buy real estate out there, or anything of the sort.

The Lake is still a well-kept secret in the Western U.S. I'd worry more about Adam Sandler talking about it than Romney.

The flip side: if Romney loses, nobody's going to think that the Lake is some sort of 3-mile Island.

'Course, that was in the 1930s, when any green field was "an airport".

—including the 10th green at the "Bald Peak Golf Course" where many golfer-pilots would land to play golf!

Air Force 1 is not always the widebody 747. It's whatever plane the president flies on.

When Bush I and Bush II were up for trips to Maine, the most common method was for them to fly the smaller plane into Sanford and then use motorcade to K-port. Sometimes, they would use the 747 into Pease but that was the exception, not the norm. Then they high-tailed it up the Maine Turnpike.

If Romney were to get elected President, there are a couple options they could do. They could fly to Pease and helicopter to Laconia then motorcade. They could do the same operation but instead fly to Sanford then Laconia via heli. Or the could use a plane direct to Laconia but I don't know enough about what planes they use and runway length to know what works and what doesn't.

Here's a picture of Air Force One at Sanford Maine I snagged from the web. You can clearly see it's not a 747....

Marine One can land on three plywood disk on the White House lawn. I am sure they can find a spot near Brewster or the Golf Course. If I was over there, I would be proud to let Marine One land in my yard no matter who was aboard.

As long as I could post the pictures of course.

When I am in DC, I always stop to look up in pride of the power of the office of the President.

OMG, It would be most appreciated my friend! My son has been bitten by the bass disease after I told him about the "reef" that exists off our dock that you told me about. He suspected such, and has since pulled multiple bass as well as a very cantankerous pickeral from this "line" that you drew for me. The "slugos?" you gave me that day have worked everywhere. CT River, Winnie, you name it. Thank you again! J's preffered lure is mostly now topwater lures but he has introduced me to salty crayfish.

We will be up there the first week of September, J and I, and would love to hook up with you. He wants to rent a pontoon for the week and I am in agreement that this would be the best way to access the weedy areas that produce. I was real disspointed to hear about Conway's closing. It's nice when your son appreciates fin and fur as a pasttime.

Mitt must have been spending the holiday weekend up at the lake, because he was in Laconia's 4th of July parade yesterday! I figure it was the closest one to his place so he could do a little campaigning and get back to enjoying the lake.
