Question on new post

When I log in and select new post, it brings up the threads with new posts. However, there may be 300 posts in that thread. I can use the top pane to scroll to new posts, but there may be a few different branches, so have to back out from reading a post then scroll to next one.

Is there a way to see only new posts? Some of the sites I visit only show what I have not read yet. Is there a setting I am missing?
