Late Saturday afternoon, several fishermen showed up in the Fourty Islands and proceeded to drill 12-16 holes, next to which they iced in their gear (stick with line & hook, no flag) into the pile of ice chips. The line & hook was left on the stick, not in the water. No one showed up on Sunday (unless it was very late in the day). I don't think the fish are going to jump out of the hole to get the hook, but there was a small dead fish next to one of the holes.
A year or two ago we observed a similar set-up on the Broads side of the islands, but then the lines were in the hole and frozen solid. No one checked the rigs the two days we were there, and they had obviously been like that for several days by the thickness of the ice covering the hole. What kind of fishing is this?
