Milfoil - Coming to a lake near you!

There is a good article in the Citizen and a better one in the La Da Sun about the advancement of milfoil in Lake Winnisquam. Specifically, the weed is making gains in the northend end of the lake. I live in the area and have always seen it in the most northen part but apparently it is making gains towards the south now.

The article goes on stating that the Meredith Selectman were briefed on the situation last night from a wateshed group and DES looking for money to help control the weed.

Does anyone know how a regular person can get his opinion presented to the Selectmen, maybe a letter to the editor or something like that?

I recall discussion about milfoil and Smith Cove in Winni on this forum last year. Was that area ever treated and, if so, how?

How long did it take between the time of gathering support for some steps to be taken and actually taking those steps? I'm wondering just how much red tape there is to this.

Town selectman are supposed to be appoachable, and have public contact information. Now weather this is more of curtosey vs. are requirement I do not know. But I would start by asking at the town hall in regards as to how to contact your selectman.

The Meredith Town website has names, photos and email addresses for all 5 of the selectmen.

I am glad that this is being discussed at the town level. I have milfoil fragments washing up on my shore daily. I wasn't happy to see that we are #9 on the list.

The NH DES has quite a bit of information on this. I have been reading the 41 page report on the treatment of Suncook Lake. Getting approval/funding might be just the beginning of a very long process. It took an amazingly coordinated effort to survey and map the milfoil areas, raise the water level (to minimize underwater currents) to obtain the 2,4D, and finally wait for a calm day to apply the 2,4D.
