New To The Forum

Hi all, I just wanted to say hi to all, and introduce myself. I have been following the forum for about a year and I have learned a lot about the area and the going on's. so I decided to join. I came from the manchester/bedford area of NH. I moved up here last September. I have family that moved up here 8 years ago and I found myself spending more and more time in the area. This place is addicting., but it's very quiet in the winter. I really enjoy reading all the post. some make me laugh which is always a welcome emotion.

....So I will spend a lot of time this winter on the computer reading the post, because there not much else to do..if anyone knows of some fun recreation that goes on in the winter let me know....

I love to go snowmobiling but i have to admit that i am scared of going on the ice. I fell through a small pond when i was around 10. Not that it was that deep, only like 3' but it scared me....I will go on it once in a while but not often......

Your kidding right?You are from here and you don't know what to do in the winter?Get yourself on skis!!There is nothing like being on top of a mountain looking over the the big white landscape before using gravity's motor as your accelerator.Hike,snowmobile,icefish.Want more excersize?X-country skiing doesn't get much more aerobic and it keeps you warm to boot.Want more adventure?Try winter camping in the mountains.It's like anything else,with the right equipment you will be comfortable and enjoy the wonderfull world of winter. Sometimes you can actually be too warm!How about ice climbing?There's plenty to do.Get out there!!

Welcome to the Winni Forum ! I've heard we're an ornary (at least I think it was ornary and not horn.., errr, nevermind) bunch but don't let that scare ya away. Just practice up on your BS'ing and you'll fit right in.

Now when cabin fever sets in mid-winter and you're looking for some semi-active recreation .... I think "we" can help you out. How well do you mush ?

Hi...is it Mary? I'm not new but i am an "infrequent" poster and I am scared of going through the ice also. When we first moved here we saw the trucks driving on the ice in Alton Bay. My husband looked at me with a sh-t eating grin and said "lets go"....just this once, he says.. Yikes

Turned out to be pretty fun after all.
We lived in manchester for a couple of years and we took pour Power Squadron Safe Boating classes there.

As for things to do around the lake in winter: if you have been reading for a while you will have heard about some crazy ladies called "Babes On Sleds" or "the Babes" for short. They are a group of ladies who enjoy screaming around the lake on snowmobiles (How fast was that, IG . . . 86mph???) We are responsible enough to only go out when the ice is very safe. There are miles and miles of snowmobile trails all over the state to explore with friends. For fun around here during the winter, there is the Rotary Ice Fishing Derby, the Alton Bay Winter Festival (where the Forum Flyer will rule the day) and the soon to be annual "Pepperfest" to celebrate the reopening of Waldo Peppers. You can take an adult evening course in fly tying or tai chi. We all basically make our own fun. Just think like a little kid and go for it! When you stop playing, you start being old. I'm never going to die!!!!!

It was 86... then I ran out of ice... (also scared myself a bit). The Babes rule in the winter, especially if the lake freezes... we will be doing our ice and snow dance early this year... last year our precipitation dances resulted in too much rain in the spring... we were trying for snow but missed it by several weeks. (I have secretly already started the snow dance).

As QL's name inplies, there is a lot of quilting that goes on in the winter... and of course there is always a trip to Home Goods for whatever ails you!

Upthesaukee runs some after dark snowshoe walks (of course we need snow for that). Just hang out here and you will find stuff to do... You can always buy a digital camera and become a famous Photoposter... that takes quite a bit of time... especially if you take a lot of pictures.

Then there are board games, card games and good books...

The local snowmobile clubs are always looking for help to groom and repair trails.

I could keep going but will give others a chance (...and I don't even live in NH in the winter, but keep coming up for all the fun!!)

For those of you that guessed Mary Lambert, you are correct !

I wasn't creative enough to think up a better screen name.
I use to own a snowmobile years ago and I loved it. so maybe it's time to buy another one. I also love to fish, but ice fishing doesn't float my bobber!!
I find it too boring. I like casting the rod and trying to place it in the perfect spot. It's a challenge and an art form.
I like to play cards (especially poker) or board games.
sorry to say to all you quilters that I don't like that kind of activity, but I have a few friends that are very talented at making quits and things. I
admire the talent some people have when it comes to arts and craft. It's just not my thing.
I'm sure that I can find thing's to do this winter. I have a big big big family so there is always something going on.

Creative enough, but don't forget that NH is tops in ingenuity for vanity license plates. We get a lot of practice trying to figure out what up to 7 letters or letters & numbers are all about

mrylmbt: Welcome to the forum! I used to read the forum and everything on the www.winnipesaukee site before I moved here and it was like this "sinful pleasure" I saved for the end of a harrowing work day. I was struck by the number of events that go on around here all year round. Lots of the local newspapers, Weirs Times, the Laker (in the summer with some other issues the rest of the year) and of course this site point out events. Just the other day, my mom pointed out (she moved up here from Massachusetts in December) that she was surprised by the number of events that occur here - highly varied ones too. Sometimes just standing back occasionally and looking at the Lake and mountain scenery and noticing all those things one by one that you take for granted in the background of a "vista" is fun and eye-opening in and of itself.
