Lake Tarleton drowning; 58-male from Bedford NH ..... 9:28-am, Friday, July 5 ..... http://www.nhsp.dos.nh.gov/news-and-...-lake-tarleton ........ http://www.nhstateparks.org/find-par...ton-state-park
On a hot humid day like July 5 paddling a canoe while wearing a pfd gets uncomfortable, fast. A foam swimmer's noodle is much less cumbersome to wear and makes an excellent swim flotation belt when tied tight around the waist. It makes you good to swim in 65-degree cold water because you are no longer worried about drowning.

It's sad that people do not appreciate that if they get dumped, it is not the same as a controlled, just-for-fun capsize. It is likely in the worst of conditions--distracted, tired, fully-dressed, windy day...
Worst offenders in our neighborhood are older paddle boarders who somehow think nothing bad could happen as they paddle to the middle of the lake, PFD-less and alone |

Canoes anywhere on Lake Winnipesaukee are a rare sight--and for good reason!

Two people kneeling on the floor of a 17' Grumman aluminum canoe makes it much more steady than sitting on the seats when its gets windy or wavy.
A 13' Lifetime Wasatch canoe/kayak designed for two paddlers is an excellent design and safe to paddle on Lake Winnipesaukee's roughest water if the paddlers are good-to-go.

I see people on canoes, kayaks, paddleboards and swimming all the time on the big lake. Happy to report those activities are alive and well.

I don't see many canoes either. The others have taken over.

We used to see youth camp groups of 4-5 canoes, sometimes on overnight camping trips. No more. Today's canoeists only know a "Hollywood J stroke" No other skills such as righting or emptying a swamped canoe, or the teamwork between bow and stern paddler. Still lots of canoe rentals on places like the Saco River where there are no power boats.
