I just saw on Facebook that George Randall has passed away. If you have been an islander for a while you would have known George. Quite the character indeed. Full of stories. He spent many winters on Cow, he was a year round resident.
He loved playing with our bulldog when he would come to deliver propane, usually with a cigarette in his mouth when leak testing ![]() RIP George |

Thanks for sharing that news Codeman…
Very sad indeed… He was a good man and quite the character to say the least! He took care of all our propane needs on the island for the past 15 years. Always had a cigarette going when testing the regulators! You will be missed George! RIP Dan

We have many memories of time with George, who would often stop by at Sandy for Friday night roast beef dinner as well as many barge trips and propane work - as others have said, typically with a lit cigarette in his mouth. I once spent a number of Saturday mornings with George when the lake level was low and we used the Kitty Belle as the bridge between the Sandy 2 and the dock at North Woods and I was working to greet our campers and help them navigate. Let's just say the conversation with George was.....eclectic??
The lake won't be the same without him!! |

George sure was one of a kind. Yes, he was quite the character, and he was also a very smart guy and talented musician. I recall him telling me that he taught a course in renaissance literature for Dartmouth. RIP George, it was a pleasure knowing you.

This is a classic George picture. I think it is the first year he had the Kitty Belle so it would be the summer of 1998.
