Current heating oil prices?

I just paid $2.79/gallon for no. 2 heating oil from Stafford on 1/8/15. That sounds high and looks based on the web page below. What have others paid recently?

Is the $2.79 a net price or an un-discounted price? Stafford usually give a $0.17 discount if you pay within 10 days. Their net cost two days ago was $2.56

This was the un-discounted price. I'm assuming the web page I was looking at was advertising un-discounted prices which is why I chose to use the un-discounted price in my post.

Newenglandoil prices are net prices.

If you belonged to Our Town Energy Alliance buying group, you would have paid $2.2673 for #2 Heating Oil...not K1...before discount or $2.1673 if paid within 10days. These prices are for deliveries that happened on 1/8/15////the same day you got the oil from Stafford. Well worth a call to join at $25/annually. Phone 603-435-3077. Daily prices are on their website. K1 prices for the same day were $2.8004 before discount or $2.7004 if paid within 10 days.

I never understood this. Gas is cheaper, but doesn't it cost more to refine crude to gasoline?

If they delivered gas to your house, it probably would be more expensive than oil. The trucks, drivers. insurance, small loads, billing, delayed payments, trips back and forth to supply points for trucks that only hold a few thousand gallons, keeping track for auto delivery, etc. etc. drive the cost up for oil. My guess is there is a $.40 - $.50 cents per gallon up charge for delivery, but that is only a guess.

Also, most of the heating oil supply is refined and stored prior to the heating season. So, this year, it was produced and stored when oil prices were much higher.

Remember fuel is only part of your heat picture. If you call somebody in the middle of the night that you haven't bought from in years, your tech may be diverted to the next guy that calls in that uses them all the time.

Still, I would have loved it at $2.95!

The biggest is that #2 has more BTUs per unit. You get more energy from #2 than from gas.

#2 is diesel fuel so you will pay the price of diesel less the fed/state road tax.

And yes you have an up charge for having it brought to your house. I happen to have a very large tank and only need one drop a year to run my house. I get 15 - 20 cents a gallon off the going price when I get it dropped.

Most years I make out better than regular customers with my discount. This year however I did not as the price has dropped so much it is cheaper now than when I purchased even with my discount.

Prices today running $2.30 to $2.55 here in central MA. Getting close to half what I paid last year! (Well, OK, it's 42% cheaper than last year.)

Rack plus program. Eastern was the vendor.

I just signed up this week. Great deal!
