Default Ice Coming in?

I was checking the two Alton Bay webcams this morning while I wait for the snow here in Jersey and noticed that the whole bay has a skim of ice on it. There was ice yesterday, too, but much of the bay was still open. No more.

Looks like it is progressing nicely.

Thumbs up

Yep it is. I believe this is the second time this season that the bay has frozen over and hopefully this time it will stay.

Default Ice forming south of Black Cat

This morning there is a skim of snow ice on the surface at Black Cat. Last night the water temp reached 32 at the probe 2 feet down, while the probe at 10 feet down went to 35. This profile is what is normally expected when the lake is frozen. The 2-foot probe rose to 35 where it is today, but the deeper probe has not warmed.

The snow is no longer melting in the water. The water is ready to freeze, and will do so as soon as it sits still. Today's temperatures continue to chill the water, as it's 13 degrees and almost noon. This is as warm as we've been all day. Snow continues to fall, which is also helping chill the water.

Default Good and Not-so-Good Ice

What we do not want is snow ice. Lets hope what is on the surface today melts.

Love that good, solid, black (clear) ice.

Default

The water temp at Black Cat Island is again down to 32 at the 2-foot depth and 33 at 10 feet. The water has not had a chance to sit still in the last several days, and today winds are gusting to 28 mph from the NW and waves are running up to 2 feet.
