The "Leaf Season" is over, but it is followed by another season that has, in my woods, its own magic: "The Leaves Season".
We've been having very nice, mostly sunny, weather lately and only a couple of days that were windy. Nights have been cold -- upper 30s. (Still a few day-boats out there). Most "turned" leaves coat the ground already -- from the northern ash, the hickory, the black birch, the other birches, the aspen, the witch hazel, maples, and all the ferns. The lake's quiet shoreline is also lined with yellow leaves. Today's scattered raindrops brought down still more gold. The effect is to coat the floor of the woods with mostly-yellow leaves. When the sun's light strikes them, it sends a golden light streaming through the windows -- and to light up the surrounding woods. It has the same effect as wearing amber-colored glasses. (Or rose-colored glasses, around my big maples). I had a dachshund that used to race through these leaves, using his snout as a "leaf-plow", and causing the leaves to fly -- just for fun. It's inspiring to man and beast, this glow. |

Mad, what a lovely description! I enjoyed the descriptions of the vivid colors and textures! I particularly enjoyed the description of the "Plow Snout!" We have a dashchund, and I can just see him doing the same thing - yup - just for fun!
Keep up the wonderful posts - I simply love when this side of you comes out!

YA Mad,I love that vision of your dog sending plumes of leaves in the air.As to the yellow carpet of leaves,I find that my swamp maples(red) leaves drop first and most of the remaining leaves on the trees are yellow. It looks so beautifull and reminds me of the lovely white carpet to follow. Can't wait! I enjoyed that very much. Sitting down here in "still green" Florida, it was a very nice touch of home.
That yellow glow throughout the woods was wonderful. Even a cloudy day looked sunny. The Rattlesnake cam today shows an awesome sight!! Time to dig out the ear muffs.

Later that drizzly day, I noticed a narrow curtain of falling leaves that wove through the woods. That ribbon of yellow leaves was traced to an out-of-sight squirrel scampering among the trees -- in the upper branches. Yesterday's winds should have kept the boats in, but the urge for "one last run" on Sunday was too great. Even a sailboater couldn't stop himself. Today (Monday) is even more windy, with heavy gusts moving the porch chairs around, all through the night. Some of that "gold" remains to fall, though. I'm glad not to have to rake an acre of leaves into a pile -- though some would object. |

.........It was a little overcast, but quite warm for this time of year. I love the smell of fall, the smell of leaves rotting, the smell of dirt. My daughter and I were raking leaves and playing in the pile. What delight in her eyes as she squealed and screamed as Daddy tossed handfulls of leaves at her. This year, we are having pretty good color in the trees, (nothing compared to N.H.) the leaves are falling late and the trees are on fire. We picked 4 different kinds of leaves in many colors and named them all. Jordyn took her time picking bits of leaves from my shirt and hair. Making sure Daddy was clean enough to go back into the house and make "skettys" for her. (Her favorite meal) These are the days I will remember forever......Still missing the Lake.....
