If you have any knowledge of taxes, I recommend reviewing your tax return yourself before your accountant submits it. I made the mistake of hiring a CPA for the first few years living here just because we had a lot going on with moving and so forth, and I found a total of 4 mistakes in 2 years returns.
These were very simple tax returns and finding these errors resulted in a much bigger refund for us as well. Not to mention because I used to do them myself I made it very easy for the accountant with organization and notes/explanations to spell everything out. I have now resorted to doing my taxes myself again. Cost for me to do our taxes on Tax Act this year? $20. Actually $13 because I had a $7 incentive credit offer for Tax Act from my credit card company! Cost for using that accountant who made errors in the past? $350 per return. Couldn’t agree more. The one time I used a CPA it was more work for me to pull together all of the documentation he wanted the to just do them myself. And my refund was less than in previous years. I started using tax software at about $40/yr and saved myself about $250/yr.
