I have read that your chances of avoiding a rabies infection is greatly increased if you wash with soap and water immediately. But... This is no substitute for prompt medical attention which would include getting the dogs vaccination history.

There is a new shot you can be given that is less painful and has fewer side-effects than the traditional treatment but there may be a window of opportunity for it. Call your doctor and get a copy of the police report. Find out if ALL those dogs had shots in case you ID'd the wrong one.

The good news is that rabies in domestic dogs is almost unheard of now. But my advice is to not play the odds in this.
