I have a motorized opener on my boathouse door and I have the two coiled springs wound tight enough that if I pull the safety release cord to the opener I could probably lift the door with one hand.

I could be wrong, but I assumed that the more work the springs did the less the wear on the motor would be. Now the motor doesn't have to work too hard to lift the door. You just have to be sure that the tension from the springs is even on both sides or the door will try to go up crooked. Not good! (I made that mistake)
