I have heard that "hard drives" were on their way out (going solid state) but hadn't heard anything about optical drives. Dell didn't offer any options that I recognized.

Dell didn't offer any options to hard drives either. OR.. maybe they did, but in a much higher end computer. The Really Big Dell XPS 8900 was double the cost of the one I got. NB

EDIT: The Dell XPS 8900 Special Edition starting @ $2200 has a solid state HD...AND... an old fashioned 7200rpm hard drive.
