BELMONT — Homicide investigators were working late into Friday night on what they termed the suspicious deaths of two people at 20 Sunset Drive in Belmont.

Senior Assistant Attorney General Jeffery Strelzin, chief of the homicide unit, said an investigation is ongoing into the deaths of two of the home's occupants.

Police said they responded to the single-family home at 11:03 a.m. Friday. After police entered, they discovered an adult male and an adult female inside the home, both deceased, Strelzin said.

The state's Medical Examiner will be conducting autopsies to determine the cause and manner of deaths. Their identities are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, he said.

Strelzin would not comment on the causes of death or if there are any suspects in the case.

"We have not arrested anybody as of yet," he said late Friday night.

Tilton police say they have detained someone wanted in relation to the investigation.

After a be-on-the-lookout alert went out at 1:50 p.m. Friday, Tilton Police Chief Robert Cormier said one of his officers detained Shawn Carter, address not given, at 2:20 p.m. and turned him over to Belmont police as requested.

The detention was related to the current investigation in Belmont by the New Hampshire State Police Major Crimes Unit, Cormier said.

The alert said Carter was possibly armed with weapons and was to be considered dangerous, Cormier said.

Strelzin would not comment on Shawn Carter.

The owner of the home said the occupants, who were named Carter, moved in about a month ago. There were two males, he said, one age 31 and the other age 40, and their mother.

At one point Friday afternoon, Ed Crawford, the owner of neighboring Winnisquam Marine, said police asked the marina to close its doors for a period that lasted a few minutes.

"Apparently they were looking for someone," Crawford said.

Crawford said he hadn't seen anyone at the home this week.

Strelzin confirmed that an alert went out Friday afternoon to Inter-Lakes High School in Meredith in connection with the case, but would not give further details.

Inter-Lakes School District Superintendent Mary Ellen Ormond said she received the alert at 1:45 p.m., which said there was a dangerous situation in another unnamed town nearby that might "spill over."

Ormond said she didn't know what the danger was, but put the school into a "secure campus" mode for a period of about 45 minutes. She wasn't sure what the link to Belmont might have been.

The New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit and the Belmont Police Department are continuing to investigate the incident, and ask that anyone with information call the New Hampshire State Police at 223-4381.
