In NH the lanterns are considered 'recreational fires' which, by law, are required to be 'attended' at all times. Once you let go of the lantern it is considered 'unattended'. You can legally fly the lanterns as long as they are tethered in some fashion, maybe kite string. Lots of these lanterns are still lit when they eventually come down.
Flying pu pu platters...what could go wrong?
