IMHO, it all coincides with the rise of the internet and subsequent explosion of the clickbait 24/7 365 news feed. We started to see glimpses under Obie, but it came to fruition under Trump. It's called PERMACRISIS! The news sites figured out they more agitated we the people are, the more $$$ they make. Subsequently, the news sites aligned themselves to the left or right depending on their audience. Covid and its lockdowns are just the icing on the cake! That agitation has now spilled over into everyday life... the sense of entitlement, poor manners, people acting like only their opinion/beliefs matter, people losing friends because of politics, disrespect for law enforcement, etc. etc. etc.! People became keyboard warriors and now they think that behavior is OK in the real world.
