Many current lakeside homeowners inherited their property and lack the ability to maintain their normal home away from the lake as well as meet all the financial obligations of lakeside home ownership, so they have to make some money off the deal in order to keep the property.
Renting it out occasionally allows them to keep it.
This is probably better economically for the area as tourists visiting for a week are more likely to spend money on attractions, restaurants and the like than are like side residents, most likely retired folks who are mostly content to stay at home.
