I've been watching the rumor forums as my Verizon contract as a few months remaining and I'd like an iPhone. I've been with VZW for over dozen years; I agree and have had few issues. The cell tower is right south from Meredith, on the mountain.
Changes are coming among all the providers and the hardware, starting summer to end of year. Sorry to be of little help for immediate plans.

There is a little coverage via a partner, but Meredith is pretty much a dead zone. So much for America's best 3G network, huh?
I have found Verizon to have great coverage throughout the lakes region; AT&T Wireless coverage is pretty much lousy.
